Beyond Chicken Rice, there's...

They are not only preparing and selling Chicken Rice. There's something special on the menu too. And that would be...

'Yong Tau Fu'
Even though you don't get to choose your own ingredients over here.
This interesting bowl of soup has everything that can satisfy your
craving. Not only there's a moderate portion of vegetables, it also
comes with ingredients like 'fish balls', 'fried beancurd', 'fried
fish cake', etc... For a start, the taste of the soup itself is
relatively sweet and the generous portion of ingredients that was
given is an eye opener. Initially, I thought that the portion of
'Yong Tau Fu' is merely an add-on to a plate of 'Chicken Rice'.
However, it seems that the portion is equivalent or bigger than a
plate of 'Chicken Rice'. The best comes as you dig into the
ingredients of the bowl of soup. The ingredients that have been
selected are those that can float nicely and doesn't end up to be
too soggy. Most importantly, the taste of the soup can blend with
the ingredients nicely, which is a big (+).

This ended up to be my lunch that day. On top of the generous
portion of 'Yong Tau Fu', I have also placed an order for a
plate of 'Chicken Rice' too. The plate of rice comes with this
nice fragrance too. :) As for the plate of 'Chicken'...

Even though I'm not so into Rice dishes, but I could never
resist a beautiful plate of white 'Chicken'. Not only it comes
with a reflective skin, the taste is pretty good too. Unlike
most of the 'Chicken Rice' stalls out there that will pour
lots of salty sauce all over the slices of 'Chicken', the sauce
over here are much more thinner and less salty. Though the
plate of 'Chicken' comes with the disturbing bones, but if
you are a big fan of 'Chicken Rice', you wouldn't find them
a nuisance. :P

So where can you give the food a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Tian Shui Hainan Ji Fan'(天水海南雞饭).
It's located in Tanglin Halt Market.

A Cantonese Breakfast

Last week, I finally understand why Hong Kongers like to have 'Rice Noodle Roll'(豬腸粉) for breakfast so badly. Rather than putting it in words, I would prefer the step of showing you food photos and explaining at the same time.

Well, here goes...
'Rice Noodle Roll'(豬腸粉)
This would be the main highlight of this post. So what's so special
about this 'Rice Noodle Roll'? Firstly, eating this reminds me of the
China delicacy 'Beijing Duck'(北京烤鸭). There is a soft layer of
'Rice Noodle' wrapping pieces of 'Char Siew', or more commonly known
as barbecued pork meat, and crunchy vegetables, which makes it almost
similar to the way how 'Beijing Duck' was prepared. Similarly, when
you compare the prices of both dishes, the 'Rice Noodle Roll', would
probably be 10 or 20 more times much more cheaper than the 'Beijing Duck'.
Having this cheap and delicious delicacy for breakfast everyday would
be a luxury. :D

As for Breakfast, what goes well with 'Rice Noodle Roll' the most?
My answer would be a bowl of Porridge. Besides preparing and selling
a variety of 'Rice Noodle Roll', this stall also prepares a large
variety of Porridge. By the way, the photo in the above shows a
bowl of 'Seafood Porridge'. It's basically a normal bowl of Porridge
with ingredients like Prawns, Cuttlefish, fish, etc...

The above would be the menu of the stall.

So where can you find this stall?

This would be the stall that sells the delicious plate of 'Rice Noodle Roll'
that I have introduced in this post. The name of the stall would
be 'Jiu Ye'(久叶) and it is located at Tanglin Halt Market.

More Info:
  • Stall closes on every Tuesday.
  • Stall closes by 10 am every morning and nope there isn't a typo and I was pretty shock myself that the stall closes at 10 am every morning.

After numerous post on Noodles, I suddenly realise...

After numerous post on Noodles, I suddenly realised that I haven't touch on the following dish at all, which was also an infamous Malay dish.

Introducing...

an infamous Malay dish, 'Mee Rebus'.
Let us go through the ingredients that were used in a bowl of 'Mee Rebus' first.
Let's take a look at the thick gravy first. Although the gravy is brown in
colour, the ingredients that were used were pretty interesting. Ingredients
that were used in preparing the soup are things like Potatoes, Soybean paste,
Curry Powder, Peanuts, etc. Looking at the major ingredients, it sort of
explains why the gravy was brown in colour.

And besides for the gravy , what else will you be getting in a bowl of 'Mee Rebus'?
Most of the time, a bowl of Mee Rebus will include ingredients like Noodle,
bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, firm tofu(Tau Kwa), green chillies, etc.

Here's another photo of the 'Mee Rebus', after mixing the ingredients
thoroughly. So what is so special about 'Mee Rebus'?
Firstly, unlike the Chinese that have been providing pickled green chillies
as a optional ingredient, the Malays uses fresh green chillies in most of
their dishes. Being a fan of Noodles and green chillies, there's absolutely
no reason why I would hate this dish. Secondly, the gravy is both thick and
sweet. If you manage to stir a bowl of 'Mee Rebus' thoroughly, the gravy
will reduce the spicy taste of the green chilli a bit. Hence you ended up
to taste the green chillies without having to worry about the spicy taste.
Last but not least, with the fact that once you have added noodles to a
thick gravy, the noodles will becomes soggy. 'Mee Rebus' isn't an exception,
therefore bean sprouts will added to a bowl of 'Mee Rebus' so that you will
still be getting a crunchy taste while savouring a bowl of 'Mee Rebus'.

The photos of the 'Mee Rebus' that I have shown in this post was prepared
by a stall located in a coffee shop located at the corner of Tanglin Halt
Road Blk 47. Frankly speaking, I love to dine in non air-conditional places.
Especially when these places were the best places to source for cheaper
and better food in Singapore. XD

Note:
  • If I'm free over the next few days, I will probably follow up with a post on one of the biggest or probably the biggest 'Mee Rebus' that you can find in Singapore.

What's for breakfast?

I think that Breakfast, probably the most important meal of the day should be something light and yet delicious, but what type of food can fall into a category that can be light and yet delicious? One of my favourite choice of Breakfast would be...

a bowl of Peanut Porridge.
Although it's known as 'Peanut Porridge', it isn't just a bowl
of plain porridge with peanuts sprinkled on top of it only.
Besides for the peanuts, ingredients included were sliced fish
cake and spring onions. Some stalls in Singapore also prepare
'Peanut Porridge' with Ikan Bilis also. As for myself, a bowl of
Porridge isn't just a bowl of healthy food only. It was also a
type of food that I can never resist. XD

Just look at the long queue, I simply can't believe my eyes.
The queue outside this stall doesn't seems to have an end to it.
And on top of it, rather than getting shorter and shorter, the
queue of the stall was becoming longer and longer... Unbelievable.

This would be the stall that sells the delicious bowl of Porridge
that I have introduced in this post. The name of the stall would
be 'Mei Jai Fried Bee Hoon' and it is located at Tanglin Halt Market.
Although, the stall specialised in preparing good fried rice and fried
noodles for Breakfast, I decided to give the peanut porridge a try.
Especially when the stall have designated a special queue for
customers buying Peanut Porridge only.:P

Ya kun isn't the only place for Kaya Bread in Singapore

When it comes to Kaya bread, most of the Singaporeans will think of Ya Kun almost immediately. And I do agree that it's one of the most common chain of coffee shop in Singapore. However, there's another place that prepares the Kaya Bread in a way that is similar to Ya Kun.

Let me introduce you to...

Five Foot Way Kaya Bread stall located at Tanglin Halt Market.
This is the same market where you can find Wei Yi Laksa.

Let us move away from Kaya Bread for a short while and turn our head a bit.
Here you go the long queue outside 'Wei Yi' Laksa as usual. (I'm drooling again~~~)

These are the ingredients inside the Kaya Bread and its almost similar to what you are getting from Ya Kun and yet you don't need to waste a lot of time waiting and queueing up.
Okay back to my Kaya Bread. Ittadakimasu~~~

More Information about 'Five Foot Way':
  • It only operates during Breakfast and Lunch hours
  • There will only be selling a limited slices of Kaya Bread everyday, so if you would want to grab a slice of it, I would recommend you to turn up early.

Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙) at Tanglin Halt Market, Singapore

I am not here to promote the song 'Wei Yi (唯一)' by the chinese artiste 'Lee Hom, Wang (王力宏)', but the name of the store at Tanglin Halt Market was indeed 'Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙)'. According on my taste bud, I felt that this was probably the best Laksa that I had eaten so far. It was much much delicious than the all time famous Katong Laksa.

Similar to my earlier post here are some of the photos that I had taken.

The Duck Noodle at Tanglin Halt Market was quite delicious also,
but not as good as...

The one and only 'Weiyi Laksa (唯一辣沙)' store at Tanglin Halt Market.

They have a few variety of Laksa and although the soup and noodle is the same,
but the ingredients for the Laksa were completely different.
You can choose the combination that suits you the best.
As for myself, the choice of 'Chicken and Fried Bean Curd'
had been my all time favourite but I decided to go for...

a bowl of Laksa with Chicken, Cockles, Fried Bean Curd and Prawns

Let's take a closer look. (I'm on fire... Whaooooooooo~~~~~)

Satisfaction always come so easily and for me the greatest
satisfaction in life comes from delicious food itself.

The queue was there even at around 8am in the morning.

More Information about 'Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙)':
  • It closes at every Monday and Friday
  • It opens the store at 5.30 am in the morning
