Worst than Dante's Inferno....

There's a reason why I'm giving the post such a title. But for a start, let's take a look at what they are offering over here...

'Papadum'
For a start, the 'Papadum' is pretty crispy. It's so shiok that one could easily forget
about the mains and wipe out the whole basket of crispy 'Papadum'.

It also comes with the 'hari chutney'. Even though this sauce is a given but it isn't
something that attracts me that much. What interest me the most would be the mains.

This is a billboard to indicate the different levels of chilli that they are offering
over here. According to the staff over here, you need to wipe out a plate of level 6
in order to earn the ticket to the next level. And there's quite a bit of rules and
regulations that you have to take note... Hence being a spicy food lover, I
decided to go for...

Since this my first and I don't think that it can get any spicier than my crazy
experience with a 'Si Chuan Ma La' hot pot, hence I decided to give the 'Level 6
Fish Curry' a good try.

'Level 6 Fish Curry'
You can choose to have it with a tube of white rice or Saffron Rice... But I ended
up trying out both of them... I will explain why later. Anyway, while placing our
orders, the warm-hearted waitress was like 'are you sure you want to take on level
6 Fish Curry?' and since this was my first visit, she's advising me to go with the
'Level 6 Chicken Curry' instead. Being over confident, I decided to stick with my
decision and here's my order.

Before moving on to the dish, let me list down the rules and regulations over here
first. For a start, you must finish everything yourself (Of Course lah) and you
cannot take any beverage(s) while eating. The rules might sound simple but wait till
you give it a try. :D

As for the dish itself, the first few spoonful are pretty okay(I guess). Though
the dish is spicy, but one can easily differentiate the taste of the super thick
fiery curry and the taste of the sweet fish. But as I dig in further, I started
getting this burning/beating sensation in my stomach... -.-"""" And that is
pretty stunning. But that isn't the worst part, after a few more bites later,
my fingers felt as if they are going to burst through the skin. And I haven't
had such an experience for quite some time. And the worst part? I'm running out
of rice and the fresh portion of vegetables. Time for the second portion....
=.="""" With a second portion of rice, I finally managed to wipe out all the
spicy fish meat. But I was told that I need to wipe out the harmless looking
fish curry too. Seriously, once you can survive through 90% of this dish, the
remaining portion isn't such a big deal anymore.

'Winning Peg(?)'
Once you have accomplished level 6, you will be given this peg and at the same
time, you have to leave your particulars with them. You can decorate the peg a
bit and hang it next to the billboard of spicy level. Hence, this is my design.
As for the bit why you have to leave your particulars, is mainly because you can
only give level 7 onwards a try after you have achieve the peg for level 6. And
you can only move 1 level at a time. Meaning you have to move from 6 -> 7 -...> 10
one by one. And like a Pyramid, the number of pegs hanging up there gets lesser
and lesser as you move up the billboard. Oh by the way, they are holding the
high levels spicy food-tasting session known as the 'Full Moon Party Chilli
Challenge' once a month. And it's free if you can wipe out the high level curries
by yourself. Do take note that only the chosen ones will be invited. (They will
either drop you a sms or an email.) Isn't it great? You can kill multiple birds
with one stone. You can have your dinner, get the peg to gain access to the next
level and at the same time, push yourself to the limits (spicy level).... :P

'Chocolate Ice Cream'
Since the day we visited this place was 3 days after my birthday, they have pop
in this ice cream for free too. This is pretty helpful since my stomach was
still undergoing this burning/beating sensation after 15 minutes or so. Though
this has reduce the beating sensation a bit but it's insufficient. In the end I
ended up wiping out 2 big bottles of milk to try to put out the burning sensation
but apparently that doesn't prove to be effective too.

So where can you give this challenge a good try?

Rice Buffet....?

Have you come across a rice buffet before? Yes? How about a 'Chilli' buffet...? And this has something to do with the post today.

'Nasi Lemak'
Pretty ordinary looking right? But, do you know that over here they are providing
unlimited refills of 'Nasi Lemak Rice' over here? On top of that, they are also
providing 2 different types of 'Sambal' chilli over here. There's the 'sweet'
Sambal and the 'spicy' Sambal. And the best part? You can have unlimited helpings
to the 'Sambal' chilli too. Frankly speaking, these 'Sambal' chilli are pretty
tasty. I could easily wipe out a whole plate of rice, just by helping myself to
the 'Sambal' chilli.

Though they have different prices for the different types of ingredients over
here, but I have decided to go ahead with the 'Fried Egg', 'Fried Fish', 'Chicken
Wing', 'Peanuts & Ikan Bilis' and 'Cucumber'. The ingredients over here are pretty
okay, the 'Chicken Wing' ain't too oily, and it still has this crispy coating that
goes around the whole thing. And these ingredients can easily blend in with the
taste of the 'Sambal' chilli too. Though the 'Sambal' are tasty but I personally
find them not spicy enough for me... (And do not doubt me, I have actually tried
both types of 'Sambal'. Though it matches the name that they have given them but
my tolerance for Spicy food is pretty high. :P)

'Power Burger'
Pretty much resembles a 'Ramly Burger', but over here it's known as a 'Power Burger'.

Nope, there isn't any vegetables. There's only a patty wrapped inside a fried egg,
which goes inside a normal bun. This makes me wonder if I can request for a second
patty to be added, because 1 patty is simply not sufficient to fill up all the empty
space in my stomach. Taste wise, this is pretty meaty. Though you can choose the
type of patty that goes inside the 'Power Burger', but it's not meaty enough. Though
I still think that it still lose out to a normal 'Ramly Burger' that comes with a
bit of veggie. :D

So where can you give all these stuff a good try?

The name of this place would be 'Nasi Lemak Kukus'.
It's located near 'Little India MRT', along 'Selegie Road'.

Grandma's Mee Siam...

This just so so happen that the title of this post is actually the name of the stall. Perhaps the recipe for the food over here were carried down for generations?

'Mee Siam'
This looks pretty much the same as compared to the usual plate of 'Mee Siam'
that you can get out there. The choice of ingredients are pretty much the same
as compared to those that you are getting out there too. However, what makes
this super special, would be the delicious gravy. The thin layer of gravy
might look pretty harmless but the taste of it is pretty strong. And at the
same time, it still managed to preserve the unique and delicious taste of the
sweet and sour 'Mee Siam' gravy. Well, the portion of the plate of 'Mee
goes on par with the price that one is paying, but if you are thinking of trying
several delicacies in this market, this would be a good dish to start with as
it helps to 'expand' your appetite to a whole new level... :)

So where can you give the 'Mee Siam' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Grandma Mee Siam'(燻鯊魚五香蝦餅).

A pair of prawns...

Like the Chinese that has bite size snacks like 'Dim Sum', all the food cultures out there ought to have some indulging bite size snacks. And that has something to the post today. :P

'Samosa'
The comes in the shape of a triangle.

First of all, I loved the crispy crust which isn't too oily. Though the size of it
is kinda small but the taste is pretty alright. (In fact, if I want, I think I can
drop the whole thing into my mouth directly.) The filling comes with a strong
taste of potatoes, which is something that I like. :)

'Prawn Vadai'
This is the speciality over here. It looks pretty much similar to the Chinese
Prawn fritter. However, unlike the Chinese, the 'Prawn Vadai' over here has a
crispy texture but it's fluffy inside. Even though, by increasing the number of
prawns, it has pretty much secure the taste of the prawns in every single bite.
But as compared to the Chinese Prawn fritter, which comes with far more
ingredients has a much stronger taste, though it's much more oily too. :P

So where can you give these snacks a good try?

No more goose only left...

Due to relevant resources, this stall used to prepare and sell goose meat, but due to some restrictions they are only preparing pork and duck meat nowadays.

'Braised Duck Meat Set Meal'
The set meal comes with a plate of 'Duck meat', a bowl of white rice and
a bowl of soup. Too bad they don't have 'Yam Rice' over here, since I
personally preferred it over a bowl of white rice. Even when it's
covered with the tasty braised sauce, I still thinks that it's much
inferior as compared to a tasty bowl of 'Yam Rice'. However...

The cuts over here are pretty thick. On top of that, the moist cuts are
pretty tasty and flavorful. In fact, I can live without the salty braised
sauce. It's the chilli sauce that I couldn't live without. Though it's
pretty nice but the chilli sauce over here just doesn't have the nice
kick. Probably I'm just too used to the usual Sambal chilli... :P

So where can you give the food a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Heng Gi Goose and Duck Rice'(興記鵝鸭饭).

When everything looks so fiery....

And by having a fiery exterior doesn't mean that the ingredients are spicy in nature. If you ended up looking at a big plate of reds, don't be afraid, what you are going experience would most likely to be a plate of...

'Indian Rojak'
Started off choosing the usual stuff like ''Fried Beancurd', 'Fried Fish Cake',
etc... then I pretty much started to give up identifying the different types of
ingredients. Event though the shape of the different types of ingredients are
completely different, but the colors are pretty much the same. =.="""

One of the interesting ingredients that they are offering over here would be a
special type of prawn fritters that is made up of mini shrimps. One might ask
what's so special about the shrimps? It simply means that every single bite out
of the prawn fritters will be filled with a nice taste of shrimps, which is (+).

Besides for the nice range of ingredients that they are preparing and offering
over here, the warm, thick and tasty sauce is a (+) too. When you started
dipping the ingredients into the sauce and pop them into your mouth, Hmmmmm...
it tastes so good. :P Rather than choosing a plate of ingredients of a similar
texture, one good reason why I like Rojak would be the nice mix of ingredients
with different textures and chewing sensation. :)

So where can you give this plate of ingredients a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Haji Johan Muslim Food Temasek Indian Rojak'.

Almost have it all...

'Little India', one of the best places to get your Briyani fix. Just by browsing through the menus of all the Indian eateries in this area requires more than half a day's work. =.=''' Anyway, time to move on... :)

'Chicken Dum Briyani'
Even though this is a Muslim stall preparing and selling Indian food but it
doesn't mean that it would lost out to the stuff prepared at a Indian stall
or restaurant. Though the queuing process can be pretty nasty, but just by
looking at the helpers over here scooping out deliciously looking portions
of food out of the gigantic pot just simply makes me feel like drooling.

Anyway, there isn't a lot of places in Singapore, where you can get such a
big plate of 'Briyani' at an affordable price. Not only the portion is great,
the taste is pretty good too. For a start, the Briyani rice is richly spiced.
Not only it comes with a nice fragrance when I scoop it inside my mouth, the
rice has a nice moist texture, which is a big (+) too. But that isn't the best
part. Even though I'm using a pair of plastic utensils, but I can scoop out
all the moist and tasty meat effortlessly, which is a big (+). Through there
isn't a lot of side dishes, but with the small portion of marinated crunchy
Cucumbers can really workout as a good side dish. The curry-like sauce is a
(+) too, in fact to a certain extent, the taste of this dish is so good that
you don't really need this at all. :)

So where can you give this dish a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Yakader'.

Andhra food

According to my friend, Andhra Food, which is a type of Indian food, are famous for it's spicy flavour. Therefore, since I'm a big fan of spicy food, I decided to give it a go.

'Chicken Biryani'
Probably some of you will picture a plate of 'Chicken Biryani' to be a complete mess,
however rather than scooping the biryani from the metal bowl onto the plate slowly,
I have a much more easier way of doing it. You can just cover the metal bowl of
biryani using a plate and flip it over quickly. Rather than lifting the metal bowl up
immediately, I would turn the bowl slowly, before lifting it up. (Usually, there will
still be a bit of biryani rice left inside the bowl. I would just scoop the rest of
them out of the bowl and add it to the plate. By the way, if you are going to use
this method, please be careful of the hot metal bowl. :P)

Taste wise, the 'Papadum' that was given was flawless. The entire thing was pretty
crispy. As for the taste of the warm biryani itself, the fragrance of the biryani
rice were pretty good. Even though the taste of the chicken meat were pretty normal,
but when you mix it with the biryani rice, the overall taste of this dish was actually
fantastic. However, despite giving more than 2 different types of curry a try, I'm
kinda disappointed because the food over here isn't spicy enough. Even though the
taste of the biryani over here were excellent, but it have not meet the expectation
of spicy food. Or maybe I should give some other dishes a try next time round.

So where can you give the tasty biryani a try?
The name of this place would be 'Andhra Curry'.
It's located near 'Little India MRT'.

Orange Hot Green Chilli?

Back then, I used to hang out at 'Little India' almost every single day. Basically, one of the main reason for my frequent visit were due to the delicious and satisfying portion of food that was given. (Most of the Indian restaurants over there provides unlimited flow of either biryani rice or white rice.) So on top of the spicy Indian food, I could also satisfy my super big appetite. Therefore, I could kill 2 birds with 1 stone, isn't that great! As for today, rather than going to write about main courses, I'm going to write about snacks.

'Mirchi Bhajji'(Fried Grren Chilli)
On top of all the heavy meals that I can get in 'Little India', I could also get snacks
like this too. So why do I love this? Being a big fan of chillies and spicy stuff, that
pretty much explain the taste of this snack. It's pretty hot and at the same time, the
texture of this snack isn't too hard or too soft. And if you are lucky enough, sometimes
you can get hold of a super crispy piece of 'Mirchi Bhajji' too. :D

The above shows the variety of snacks that this place is offering. (I don't think I have
even tried half of the spread as most of the time, I would only go for the 'Mirchi Bhajji'. :P)

The name of this place would be 'Big Bites'.
They have a few outlets island-wide and the
above shows their outlet along 'Serangoon Road'.

Going with Indian Food....

I miss the days that I used to pop by 'Little India' for most of my Lunch and Dinner. Even on the weekends, I would take a 'stroll' from the outskirts of 'Little Indian' and slowly move towards the heart of 'Little Indian'. (Trust me, there's actually another reason why I'm doing this. You wouldn't want to hop onto a bus and go through or even go near 'Little India' on a weekend...) Anyway, I miss those days back then and too bad 'Little India' isn't within walking distance from my current workplace. :(

Here comes the main topic of this post...

We were having dinner at this place and all of us ended up ordering the
same item on the menu. =="" And each set comes with a bowl of curry and
'Raita', which is a bowl of white yogurt that comes with cucumbers and
onions most of the time. Depending on the chef, ingredients like Tomato
might also be added to 'Raita' too. I still can remember the days that
I used to set all the 'Raita' aside... But as time goes by, I'm currently
used to the taste of the it. (Pretty amazed with myself too. :D)

The set meal also comes with Papadam, this is similar to a giant cracker.
Or I think I cam put it this way. Most of the Indian set meals in Singapore
comes with a 'Papadam', regardless of whether it's a rice set meal or a biryani
set meal, most of these set meals will come with a 'Papadam'.
Note: Dhosal, prata, etc are not considered as set meals.

And here comes the main dish of the day...

Dum Country Chicken Biryani...
Most of the time, I will just go ahead with normal Dum Chicken Biryani.
But once in a while, a change is needed. :) Oh the looks of this reminds me
of the older days that I used to scoop out the rice and the ingredients slowly...
Recently, I tend to place my plate on top of the bowl and flip it around.
And it will becomes...

this. :D
Note: If you have ordered Dum Biryani, the metal bowl would tend to be
pretty hot. This is because the biryani rice and the meat or vegetables
are meant to be cooked together so that the taste and fragrance of the
ingredients can blend together nicely. Therefore you can either scoop
out the biryani rice and the ingredients slowly or wait for a while
before giving my method a try. :D

Taste wise... I think that the taste of the rice and the chicken haven't
really blend together. Please do not be mistaken, the taste of the biryani
was pretty good but if the chef have spend a few more minutes cooking,
the taste of the biryani will taste much more better.

By the way, if you cannot tolerate the taste of the spicy curry, you can
also try the method of having a bite of biryani rice and curry followed
with a bite of 'Raita' and then back to a bite of biryani rice.. and so
on and so forth. :D

The name of this place would be 'Anjappar'. In terms of the popularity,
'Anjappar' seems to be one of the famous Indian restaurant in Singapore.
In fact, they have a chain of outlets around Singapore but I'm not sure
why did they list out only 2 outlets on their website.
(Either it's due to the fact that they haven't been updating their website
or maybe 2 outlets that were mentioned on the website were the better ones...?)

* Click here for the 'Anjappar' website.

In pursuit of large portions of Indian food

From time to time, my stomach will have the urge to eat a large portion of food... (Help... I think my stomach is taking over my body...:P) One of the better place than I could suggest will be this restaurant located in 'Little India'.

The 1st course would be... food images. :D

This would be the Mutton Biryani. Although they don't serve Dum Biryani's here, the Biryani's that were served here considerably good.

The photos in the above are showing the 'Masala Chicken Biryani Set'. Doesn't it looks delicious to you?

Before moving any further let me explain why I like this restaurant.
  • You can sort of customised your own 'Chicken Biryani Set'. For example, Masala Chicken, Pepper Chicken, Fried Chicken... etc.
  • Biryani rice were free flow, this would be my best reason
  • Food at reasonable price.

So what is the restaurant behind all these 'Biryani Set'?

This would be the restaurant behind all the delicious looking Biryani's.
The name of the restaurant would be 'Sakunthala'. In fact, looking at how frequent I have been having my Dinner and Lunch in Little India back then, I was pretty surprised that I didn't grew very during 3 years ago. In fact, I think I was having at least 10 meals weekly at Little India

Another 'Kueh' place....

Close to a month ago, I had mentioned about a place in Singapore selling 'Kueh'. There is another place that sells cheap and good Indonesia 'Kueh' also.

First thing first, photos first. :D

Left: Pandan Sponge Cake
Right: Kueh Dar Dar
I am making my way to Tiong Bahru Market and I suddenly
remember the existence of this store near Tiong Bahru Market.
This was probably my 3rd set of breakfast in the same morning. :P
But I just couldn't resist all these cheap and delicious delicacies
especially when these Kuehs were made from Coconut and Pandan,
which were some of my favourites ingredients.

They have some other delicacies also.
For example: Baked Tapioca cake, Onde Onde... etc

The store behind these delicacies would be 'Indo-Asian Delights'.
It has 2 small stalls located in 2 different coffee shops located
along the streets of Tiong Poh Road. And the main branch would be
located near the streets of Little India.

* Click here for the locations of 'Indo-Asian Delights'.

Misconception of Indian Food

Indian food isn't just about spicy food only. There were also delicious Vegetarian Indian food in Singapore also. Similarly, Indian food isn't just rice dishes only, there were delicacies like Naan, Thosai, Chapati ... etc. As for today, I am going to introduce you to a Vegetarian Indian restaurant that I have been going to for the past few years. :D

As usual food images come first :P.

Although I'm not a vegetarian, that doesn't mean that I don't like to eat vegetarian food.
In fact, I like the Masala Thosai here. Especially when the skin of the Thosai was pretty crispy and the amount of ingredients that the chef have stuff inside were pretty generous.
Note: Another misconception, Masala is a type of spice only. Therefore, if you like dishes with Masala, you can consider trying the Masala Thosai available at this place.

The restaurant behind the above dish would be 'Ananda Bhavan' restaurant.
They have a chain of restaurants along the streets of Little India.
