Fanciful Rice Dishes...

Unlike a typical stall that focus on 1 or 2 types of rice dishes, the stall over here is far more interesting. On top of that it seems more like a typical 'Cze Char' stall rather than a normal 'Chicken' or 'Duck' stall.

'Oatmeal Fried Chicken Rice'(麥片雞扒飯)
This dish is neither Chinese nor Japanese. It's a bowl of white rice topped
with a Japanese like Fried Chicken Cutlet and crispy oatmeal bits. Besides
for the meaty bit, there's a fried egg and a small portion of vegetables too.
If you ask me, this is probably the result of the amazing range of cuisine
that you can get in Singapore.

Taste wise, it's a (+). Not only it's juicy, the Fried Chicken is reasonably
crunchy and tasty too. When you mixed it with the small bits of oatmeal,
the taste of this bowl of rice simply gets more and more interesting. As for
the fried egg, I personally find it to be a bit too boring. (Or probably it's
the meat that is far too tasty, therefore...) Anyway, for spicy food lovers,
do remember to give their blend of Chilli a good try. :P

So where can you give this dish a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Pin Wei Local Kitchen'(品味小廚).
It is located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Notes:
  • Operating Hours:
    11:00 - 21:00
  • By the way, if you are a Noodles/Rice Noodles/Rice vermicelli person, you can try requesting for a special variation of the same dish and replace rice with your favorite alternatives, which works too. :)

A taste of Taiwanese Porridge...?

There is a place that I tend to pass by every now and then and every time I pass by the place, I told myself that I must try their food. The only excuse that I have for not trying the food of that place would be due to the fact that I'm dining alone. =="" But after I thought through the number of crazy things that I have done for the paste year, I think that that's a pretty lame excuse and I should just go ahead trying their food... (Example of crazy things that I have done: having a very big bowl of 'Yong Tau Hu' alone, having more than 5 meals in a day, etc...)

This would be my dinner for that day.
Some dishes and a bowl of porridge.

This place doesn't serve normal white porridge. What they have
here would be 'Sweet Potato Porridge'. Although only a handful
of sweet potato was given, that's already satisfying enough.
By the way, you only need to pay a fixed price to be entitled
to unlimited bowls of 'Sweet Potato Porridge'. (I, myself had
3 bowls of porridge that day. Oh by the way, they have normal
white rice too, if you aren't a big fan of porridge.)

'Preserved Salted Vegetables with Pork'(梅菜扣肉)
The chefs might have been spending long hours preparing this
dish. The taste of the garlic have blend into the vegetables
completely and the colour of the garlic was so dark that I
almost mistaken it as a piece of meat. (Though I still find
this dish a bit costly. :O)

'Sambal Gui Miao'(参巴龟苗)
This is looks and tastes like long beans. I tried to Google
about the vegetables used in this dish and it seems that
'Gui Miao' is a type of long beans. I love the way they are
preparing this dish. Besides been spicy, the crunchy touch
that the vegetables has and the taste of it has given me
sufficient reasons for visiting them again.

'Fried Chicken with Onion Ginger in Claypot'(砂煲姜葱鸡)
This would be the main dish of this meal. Besides for the
heavenly smell that is coming out from this claypot, the
is pretty good too. But this is a pretty common dish in
Singapore, so it aren't so easy to make it very special.
Either ways, just by ordering this, I think one could
easily finish 2 bowls of rice or porridge.

'Fresh Cockles'(新鲜生蛤)
Well, it aren't very nice if you are turning turns eating
a hot dish, followed by a cold dish and so on and so forth.
Therefore, by looking at the size of the plate, I decided
to leave this out for the last. After I started stirring
the cockles a bit, I regretted for ordering this dish.
Although the cockles are pretty fresh indeed, but after I
tried finishing the whole plate (like 30+ cockles), my
stomach started spinning like a washing machine. I'm
wondering that's because my I haven't been eating
'Fresh Cockles' over the past few months.

So where can you get all the dishes listed in this post?

The name of this stall would be 'Gu Zao Ren Seafood Taiwan
Porridge'(古早人煮炒台湾粥). What I have shown here would be
the branch located at 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Notes:
  • Although their opening hours start from evening till midnight, but their Rice and Sweet Porridge tend to sold out pretty quickly.

Just another drink stall

Normally what's your favourite drink to go with your delicious meal? As for myself, probably due to an overdose(overconsumption) of soft drinks, I have restrained myself from drinking all the fizzy soft drinks. Hence, I started to take drinks like 'Grass Jelly', 'Wheat grass', etc...

As for today...

'Pineapple Juice'
So what's so special about this drink? Basically, I guess most of
the older Hawkers Centres in Singapore still have a drink stall
or two selling all these 80s or 90s drinks. Usually I will order a
big mug and sit in a small corner and have my 'Happy Meal'.
Reminds of the good old days where all these drinks were poured
into a big glass mug... Those were the days.

By the way, one good thing about this drink would be the fact
that you are paying an dollar for it and besides for the pineapple
juice, you will also be getting slices of pineapple which helps
you to quench your thirst on a crazy sunny day. :D

Menu of the stall.
Look I'm not bluffing lo. :P
(Sometimes I will ended up getting myself a packet of 'Soya Bean'
drink and walk to the next bus stop... or might as well walk home. :P)

Name of the stall?

The name of the stall would be 'Long Sheng Hot & Cold Drinks'.
It is located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Pure Prawn Noodles

Speaking of Prawn Noodles nowadays, it would probably be a bowl of cooked noodles with ingredients like Prawns, fish cake and/or meat balls and vegetables like bean sprout and a bit of green vegetables. However, I'm pretty surprise that...

there are a place selling a bowl of 'Prawn Noodles'

Putting aside all the other ingredients that you can get at
any other Prawn Noodles stall, the main ingredient of this
bowl of Prawn Noodles are mainly Prawns and vegetables only.
Probably that was the same reason that this stall is giving
this dish a name of 'Pure Prawn Noodles'.

Upon placing an order for this 'Pure Prawn Noodles', the owner
will ask you to choose the type of Prawns that you prefer.
You can either choose the bigger prawns that comes with the shell
(that was shown in the above photo) or the shell-less prawns.
Taste wise, the noodles and the prawns are pretty normal, but
the owner was pretty generous with the ingredients.

As for the soup, I love it. Besides for the nice strong fragrance
that the soup has, it also comes with a nice prawn taste.

Besides for the unique 'Pure Prawn Noodles', they also sell normal
Prawn Noodles, Pork Rib & Prawn Noodles, Pig Tail Noodles, etc...

The name of this stall would be 'Seng Huat Prawn Noodle Soup'.
It is located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Things to note:
  • Stall is closed on Mondays
  • Operating Hours: 12pm - 12am daily

Chinese Ramen

I love Japanese Ramen but do you know that the origin of Ramen can be trace back to China? Being a Noodles fanatic myself, I'm always eager to try a new Noodles stall, therefore I'm going to introduce another Noodles stall today. :D

Photos, photos~~
Fried Dumplings (left)
A good mixture of vegetables and meat, which makes it pretty
delicious. On top of that, the skin of the Dumplings were
handmade, which makes it more chewy and taste better than
machine-made Dumplings skin. (I think)

Spicy Chicken Noodles (right)
Ingredients are cucumber, peanuts, pieces of diced chicken,
vegetables, etc. Not to forget about the part that the Noodles
are hand-made too. Despite of the fact that hand-made ingredients
doesn't turn out to be very good looking, but I loved all these
Hand-made ingredients, as they give me the impression that they
were much more tasty.
In fact, the combinations of this simple bowl of Noodles is pretty
interesting. Noodles that comes with Cucumber, which is cooling,
with a simple spicy touch. Sort of reminds me of Assam Laksa taste
but with a cooling touch and the soup is colourless.

Dumplings Noodles Dry(left)
My second attempt with the Noodles of this stall. It seems
that they will add cucumber to all the Noodles that you are
going to order. Too bad the Noodles still turns out to be
a bit soupy and the chilli isn't that great at all. Otherwise
I think that the cucumber idea is pretty nice and the
Dumplings were much bigger than the usual Dumplings that we
are getting. (Finish or take out the Dumplings asap otherwise
it will ended up to be pretty watery or soggy.)

Dumplings in Spicy sauce
Since the stall owners doesn't seems to be locals, I was
expecting something much more spicy. But probably they think
that I'm just an average Singaporean, therefore this didn't
ended up to be very spicy. Probably if I have the chance to
pop by the place again, I will try requesting for a plate of
Dumplings in Extra Spicy Sauce.

Dumplings
If you are health cautious or you are trying to cut down on
the amount of oily food, you probably can give this a try.
It's exactly the same as the Fried Dumplings except for the
fact that this was boiled rather than deep fried. Like what
I had mentioned earlier, the proportion of the ingredients
were pretty good and I would highly recommend everyone to try
wither this or the Fried Dumplings.

Steam Buns, 'Xiao Long Bao'(小笼包)
The skins of these Steam Buns were too stiff and I think
that it will taste much better if the skins are much more
thinner, which will ended up to be pretty challenging,
especially if you don't want to waste all the good soup
of the Steamed Buns.

So where can you find this stall?

The name of the stall would be 'Dong Ji La Mian Xiao Long
Bao Chu Mi Fen'(东记拉面小笼包粗米粉) and this stall can be
found in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'. It is located
next to the infamous dessert stall.

Just another Soya Bean stall

I was writing about the Organic Soya Bean Curd stall located in ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre a few weeks ago. I realise that within the same place there was not just one but two different stalls that's selling similar food items.

Bandung Cold Soya Bean Curd
Although both places are selling and making Bean Curds but both
stalls have differences too. As for the biggest difference, I guess
that it would be the flavours of Bean Curd that they are offering.
Although there are some flavours that both stalls are offering but
there are also flavours that only one of the stalls will be offering.
For example, the flavour that I have shown here. 'Bandung' was one
of the flavours that only one of the stall is offering.
So if you are a fan of Cold Soya Bean Curd, you can probably try
visiting both stalls looking for the flavour that suits you the best.
Taste wise, I just can't resist all these sweet and ice cold dessert,
which is also a healthy substitute for 'Mango Puddding'.
By the way, 'Bandung' is a mixture of both rose syrup and milk.
it was a speciality of Malaysia.

This is how the stall looks like. Similar to what I have mentioned
earlier, this stall is located inside ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre.

It's Time for the Wow Wow West...

Time to move on to the 'Wow Wow West' and nope, I'm not referring to the 18th century America with lots of cowboys riding across America. What I'm refering here would be the stall that sells western food and has a stall name of 'Wow Wow West'.

As usual, photos of food comes first.

I like Fish & Chips.
When it comes to Western Food, my first choice would always be Fish & Chips.
I have always love the soft piece of fish that comes with a crispy texture.
Although the other types of meat were just as great, but Fish & Chips
have always been my first priority when it comes to Western food.

Although there are more and more chain of restaurants that specialising in
preparing and selling Western Food, etc. Astons, Botak Jones, this was
probably one of the first few places that prepares cheap, generous and
delicious Western Food. For every main dish that you have ordered, not 2
but 3 side dishes will be given. The 3 sides dishes would be French Fries
(taste pretty ordinary, or maybe it's because I'm not into French Fries),
Coleslaw(Oh man, I can't believe that Coleslaw can be so delicious) and
also baked beans(Pretty ordinary also).

Chicken Cheese Sausage
I'm not sure about the past but it seems that they have added a few more
new items to the menu. This would probably be one of them. Just look at
the size of the Sausage, the length was similar to the length of my palm.
I'm pretty sure that it isn't an easy task for you to find food stalls
selling such thick and lengthy Sausages in Singapore. Although the taste
was pretty normal, but for the price that you are paying, I guess that
it's pretty worth it after all.

The above would be the menu of the stall. Look look, most of the items
on the menu are less than S$10, which is a +1.

So where is the stall located?

This would be the look of the stall and
it is located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

More Info:
  • Stall is closed on Sunday.
  • Open till 9pm daily.
  • There's another store with the name of 'Wow Wow West' located in Henderson Market too. The interesting part was the owner for both stalls used to be the same person, but according to some news articles on the Internet, I guess that he had given up the ownership of the stall located in Henderson Market to someone else and he currently only has a stall left and that would be the stall located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Something special for everyone, Crab Meat Popiah

I guess most Singaporeans have eaten a Popiah before, but have you eaten a Popiah that comes with Crab Meat before? And that is going to be our main topic today.

Here comes...
the Crab Meat Popiah.
Main ingredients included are Crab Meat, Egg, Peanuts and Vegetables.
Best of all, each roll of Popiah doesn't comes with Pork or Lard.
Which means that unless you are a vegetarian, otherwise you wouldn't get
into any form of trouble eating this. XD On top of the ingredients,
this isn't the kind of Popiah that you would have difficulty handling
them. The skin was actually made up of multiple thin layers of Popiah
skin to prevent the ingredients to fall apart. (I like it.)
And this is probably my first encounter with a stall selling a roll of
Popiah that comes with Crab Meat. Interesting taste and I don't mind
coming back here for more... but....

Photo of the stall owner making a roll of Popiah.

So where is this Popiah stall located?

The name of the stall would be 'Ong Khim Popiah' and it is located
in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

More Info:
  • Once a queue started to appear in front of this stall, waiting time can be quite nasty.
  • Drawback of the stall would be the irregular dates that the stall will be opened for business.
  • They close at around 9 pm at night.

The importance of a plate of rice...

When it comes to eating a plate of Chicken Rice, the rice actually plays a very big role in the local delicacy. Therefore, I am going to introduce to you a good place that prepares and sells good Chicken Rice. Introducing...

The above would be a plate of Chicken Rice with visceral (internal organs).
Usually I don't go for visceral, but I also don't like to hold on to too many
coins with me too. Therefore I decided to top up a bit more, so that I don't
need to hold on to any coins at all. (Kill 2 birds with 1 stones. XD)

So what's so special about the Chicken Rice of this place?
First of all, this stall was probably serving one of the best fragrance rice
that I have tasted so far. Secondly, the portion that was given was pretty
generous and at the same time delicious. Thirdly, despite of the fact that
this stall is selling boneless chicken, the taste of the Chicken is as good
as, no I think that it's even much more tastier than normal Chicken. XD.
Last but not least, I also like the way they are preparing each and every
plate of Chicken Rice. Unlike some other stalls that I frequent, this stall
is preparing the rice and the Chicken meat on 2 separate plates.

As for the reason why I like the way they are preparing the Chicken meat,
would be due to the fact that by placing the meat on a separate plate,
the Chicken would be able adsorb the sauce thoroughly. Although, this extra
step have also made it even much more oily but for the sake of each and
every slice of Chicken, everything is worth it. XD

The above would be the menu of the Chicken Rice stall, in case
anyone of you out there wanted to find out what other dishes
this stall is offering.

So where is this stall located?

The name of the stall would be 'Tong Fong Fatt(東風發)' Hainanese
Boneless Chicken Rice stall. It seems that they have opened have a few
branches opened within the Town area, hence you would probably want to
try Googling a bit and search for the most convenient stall to visit.
As for the stall that I have shown in this post, it was the one that
was located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Note:
  • The stalls closes at around 8-9pm daily.

Everything started off with a simple conversation...

Be careful of what you are saying. Sometimes it will ended up to be a major disaster. Everything started off with a simple Mandarin conversation between A and B...

A: 你要去哪裏?(Where are you going?)
B: 我要去「吃你豆腐」。(I want to go to a place known as 'Chi Ni Dou Fu'.)
A: 。。。(Hell have break loose....)

As for the main reason behind the major disaster would be due to the fact that the four Chinese characters 「吃你豆腐」 is a pun. It literally means eating Bean curd and at the same time it can also mean that you are going to take advantage of a person's body. As for today, I am going to introduce a place that is related to the conversation in the above. Introducing...

Organic Soya Bean Curd.
Although the taste was similar to normal Soya Bean Curd, the price was also
slightly more expensive. But hey since it's a a type of organic food, the
benefits that you are getting from eating was fantastically wonderful.
I have tried both the Sweet Corn flavoured and the Pandan flavoured Soya
Bean Curd before and throughout the whole process of savouring, I can
taste a strong fragrance of the ingredients in my mouth. That is simply an
experience that I would never forget. Some other flavours of Bean Curd that
you can choose includes Red Bean, Mango, Honey Dew, etc...

So what is the name of the stall and where can you find it?
The name of the stall would be 'Chi Ni Dou Fu(吃你豆腐)stall'.
I guess by the time now you should more or less knew the relationship
between the conversation in the above and this stall... Ooh and by the
way, this stall is located in 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'.

Note:
  • This stall is closed on Tuesday.
  • The operating hours starts from 8am to 9pm.
  • Note: for some of the best selling Bean Curd, they would only be making it once or twice in a week. Hence in order to avoid disappointment, I would highly suggest that you should make a call @ (83282488) to check what are the Bean Curds that are available before you make a trip down to the stall itself.

Some delicacies are difficult to find but worth searching...

Why do I say so? In Singapore, with the increase in the numbers of Hawker Centre or Food Courts, it isn't a difficult task in finding the food that you wanted to eat. But at the same time as we are moving towards a fast paced lifestyle, some individuals cannot afford to spend an hour's time having a good meal. Hence some of the delicious delicacies tend to wind up their business due to insufficient funds to continue their businesses.

As for today, I am going to introduce to you a delicacy that puts your patience to a test.
Introducing...

Claypot Rice.
This is a local delicacy that is dying out in large numbers due to the
fact that the time needed to wait for a delicious pot of Claypot
Rice is too long. Note: depending on the queue of the store, you
might ended up waiting for an hour or so just for a pot of Claypot Rice.

So what will you be getting in a pot of Claypot Rice?
You will be getting a pot of cooked rice, chicken chunks,
preserved sausages, vegetables and if I'm not mistaken salted
fish. All the ingredients stated in the above will be covered
with a layer of dark soya sauce and a bit of sesame oil(I think).
So that's probably the main reason why the waiting time is much
more longer than the other delicacies. Especially when most
of the Claypot Rice Stalls in Singapore will only cook
a pot of Claypot Rice after an order have been placed.
Well like what they say, 'No Pain, No Gain'. :P

Some important information:
  • Upon getting the Claypot Rice, mixed thoroughly for a few minutes otherwise the rice will stick onto the Claypot.
  • Some Claypot Rice in Singapore pour a lot of Dark Soya Sauce on top of the ingredients but this stall only pour probably half the amount of what you are getting any the other stores. Although that has also increase the difficulty of mixing the ingredients together, but the taste is still the same and it is more healthier. :D

So where can you find this delicacy?

The stall is located at 'ABC Brickworks Market/Food Centre'. Besides for this Claypot Rice stall, delicacies like 'Chao Zhou' fish balls, Fried Hokkien Prawn noodles, Satay Bee Hoon, desserts, etc can be found in the same market too.

Note:
  • This stall is closed on Wednesday.
  • Their operating hours starts from lunch time all the way to dinner time.
  • Take note they only have Claypot Rice for groups of 2 or more unless you are very confident that you can finish up a pot of Claypot Rice for 2 by yourself. (Which is something that I have been doing.)
