Who is Uncle Bern?

Some might wonder who is 'Uncle Bern'? Though most of us might have no idea who he is. But you might have eaten some of his earlier creations ('Botak Jones') before.

"Big Bern’s Fish & Chips" Since I am given the chance to choose my own sides, I decided to go with the 'French Fries' and 'Double Baked Cheese Potatoes'(Mashed). For a start, the 'Potatoes' are pretty interesting. It also comes with onions which pretty much explains why there's a crunchy touch on top of the mushy potatoes texture. Not too bad for a start. The French Fries that comes with it are pretty crunchy too. Though the 'Tartar sauce' isn't crunchy and delicious enough, but the slices of 'Fried Fish' are worth a big (+). Not only they are coated with a nice layer of bread crumbs, the flesh that was wrapped inside it are pretty firm too. And not forgetting the generous portion that comes with it. :D Not too bad for a dinner. :) Their menu looks pretty interesting too, especially when they are offering a much more bigger selection of food as compared to 'Botak Jones'.

So where can you give the food a good try?

Not really a salad bar...

Here comes a salad bar that doesn't sells salad only. In fact, their specialities over here are...

'Chicken Cutlet Set Meal'

Their specialities are 'Western food'. Even though they are preparing and selling different kinds of salad too but most of the time, I would go for the affordable western food that comes with a generous portion. I have already tried the 'Chicken Cutlet' before. The cutlet is pretty crispy and not too oily. One of the good pointers about this set meal would be the number of set dishes that you can choose. Besides for the common stuff like 'French Fries', 'Baked Beans', 'Coleslaw', they also have unique offerings like 'hashbrown', 'corns' and 'baby carrots'. Though the taste of the sides ain't too special but as mentioned earlier, the price that you are paying here is pretty reasonable and the generous portion is a (+).

'Fish & Chips Set Meal'

Somehow I always turned up at the stall pretty late, since I wanted to avoid the crowd, I always ended up getting the same few side dishes. So far, I have tried 2 set meals and I wouldn't say the mains are super attractive, what keeps me interested would be the generous portion and the affordable price. :)

So where can you give the 'Western Food' a good try?

The name of this stall would be 'Salad Bar'. It's located inside the NUS Frontier Canteen.

They have populated the walls over here with lots of posters that consist of all these interesting pick up lines. I was pretty amused with some of the posters hanging on the wall over here. :D

'Ribs'...

more 'Ribs'...

so many 'Ribs'... They are not only preparing 1 type of ribs. There's actually 5 different types of 'Ribs' that one can try over here. And I have given all 5 different types of 'Ribs' a good try already. :D 'Signature Hickory BBQ Sticky Bones' If you are into thick smoked 'Ribs', this is the thing for you. Not only it's coated with this thick BBQ sauce, the overall taste of the 'Ribs' are pretty solid too. And frankly speaking, the sauce itself is a bit too thick for me and in fact it's so thick that I think I will have problem finishing 1/2 a slab of this.... :| 'Garlic BBQ Spare Ribs' Out of all the 5 different flavors that they are offering over here, I guess this is the easiest to be accepted by everyone. And I don't find it spicier and as funky as the other flavors that they are offering over here. 'Tuscan Baked Spicy Spare Rib' This is the most funkiest version of 'Ribs' that I have ever tried till date. Probably because I myself isn't a big fan of Tomatoes for a start. But as compared to the taste of the 'Ribs' the taste of the 'Tomatoes' are far too overpowering, which to a certain extent makes me wonder what am I eating? A chewy 'Tomatoes' or ...? 'Spicy Asian BBQ Spare Ribs' Though it might look fiery but the appearance can be deceiving. I'm getting the nice sweet taste of the BBQ sauce but I'm not getting the fiery sensation that I'm expecting. Pretty disappointing for a 'Spicy Asian BBQ Spare Ribs'. Last but not least would be my favorite, which is... 'Smoked Peppercorn Spare Ribs' The 'Ribs' comes with this nice blend of both sweet and spicy taste, topped with a very nice aroma too. Personally, I find this the best out of all 5 flavors. It's giving the nice spicy sensation that I like, topped with a moderate level of sweetness, which makes this a pretty big (+). The texture of all the 'Ribs' over here are pretty tender and not forgetting the juicy and chewy meat that goes around the bones. In fact, probably it's due to the fact that I'm ordering 1/4 slab at a time, therefore I don't have any difficulty ripping the meat and the bones apart since they are served 'fresh' too. :D

All the 'Ribs' sums up to a 'Boney Hill'...

'Red Skin Mashed Potato' If you are hoping that this would ended up to be pretty much similar to those that you are getting out there, you will be so so disappointed. Slightly a bit more dry than those that comes with a sauce, the ones over here has a thicker texture and it's much more thicker in taste too. And not forgetting much more filling too. =.="" But it comes with the skin too, which makes this pretty indulging.

'Corn Bread' They should categorize this as a 'Muffin' rather than a bread. The fluffy texture that goes on top and the nice sweet fillings that rest at the bottom, simply makes this a pretty interesting combination. Not too bad for a 'Bread'. :D

'Soup of the Day' Seems like a rich vegetable soup to me, but I personally find the next soup to be far more superior than this. And superior over here doesn't mean that it's richer in taste, I find the texture to be much more better too.

'Mushroom Soup' The creamy soup that comes with a rich mushroom taste simply makes every single scoop better and better. I wanted to go for a second helping but unfortunately this is the last few bowls of the day, which is kinda sad. :(

'Coleslaw' I wanted something refreshing and cooling to act as a full stop to my pleasant dining experience over here and this has fit in perfectly. Though this still couldn't replace a scoop of ice cream completely, but it isn't that bad either. :)

My confession...?

We decided to hit one of the premium outlets after work. And off we go... After spending an hour or two browsing through all the different offerings that one can get over here, we decided to have our dinner over here...

'Jalapeño cheese sticks' For starters, we are going to have the 'Jalapeño cheese sticks'. Easily mistaken for 'Fish Sticks', these are actually 'Jalapeño'...

For a start, the outer layer of these 'Jalapeño sticks' ain't too thick and they have managed to create small little sparks in my mouth. Not knowingly the name of these sauces, but they do manage to blend in well with the overall taste of the 'Jalapeño'. :)

'Seafood Combo' When I looked at the photo that was appearing on the menu, I was like it can't be for real. I don't think the portion can be that 'big'. In fact over here in Singapore, most of the 'Fish & Chips' that you can find and get in Singapore would comes with a slice of battered fish. And I know that there are places that would be giving you 2 slices of fish. But over here, I was astonished with the portions that they are serving over here. The photos are real~~~ Oh my god...

I don't think there's a need for the 'refillable fries' when the portion over here ain't just big, it's humongous... I think I can try to finish everything but with the amount of things that I have ordered, that's kinda difficult. For the mains, wrapped inside a layer of crispy crust, the flesh of the seafood isn't that bad. but it gets kinda sickening when there's 3 slices of fish and shrimp. As compared to the fries that comes with this combo set, the flesh of the seafood slices are far more firm and far more appealing than the fries which isn't crunchy enough.

'Chicken Tacos' One thing that I have learnt from my travels, never let a chance to slip away. If you have come across something that you wanted to try and your stomach has the space(?) for it, do not hesitate and do give it a try. Therefore I have also ended up with this big plate of 'Chicken Tacos'. Loaded with lots of vegetables and a small portion of meat, this isn't that bad. Though the ingredients are wrapped inside a soft Taco, but with the amount vegetables loaded inside the 'Taco', it ended up to have this refreshing and crispy sensation, which is a (+). However the portion is slightly a bit too big.... In fact, I was happily pointing out that over here, I personally felt like an average eater. But my colleague was pointing out that over there they will finish half the portion and have the other half as packed lunch tomorrow afternoon and I saw like. TT.TT They goes with my native thinking.... :P

Carls Junior Origins?

What can an individual do when he managed to wake up pretty early in the morning in an unfamiliar environment? The answer will be...

to check out the different options for breakfast... :D And this happens to be one of them... 'The Redhook® Beer Battered Cod Fish Sandwich Meal' Though it's merely the morning, but you can also get the usual sinful burgers and fries. Being a big fan of Carl's Junior, I decided to give the burgers over here a good try. :P As compared to the meals that one can get in Singapore, the portions over here are ridiculously too big to be true. Just the cup alone is pretty amazing already. It's crazily big and on top of that, the selection of beverages over here are pretty stunning too. Just by giving all the drinks a try can easily satisfy one's hunger... =.=""" The generous portion of fries are pretty good too. I shouldn't have ordered such a big portion for breakfast... @.@

This burger is made up of ingredients like 'Beer Battered Cod Fish', sliced 'Lettuce', sliced 'Tomatoes', 'Tartar sauce', wrapped inside a sesame bun. Even though the burger doesn't appears to be as big as those that are appearing in the commercials, but the taste of the burger is pretty decent. Not as bitter as they portrayed it to be, but the sweet taste of the fish topped with the 'Tartar sauce' are pretty reasonable. This makes me wonder how thick the 'Beef burgers' will ended up to be. (Even though I'm not a beef eater... :P But it will be fun to share the photos of it around... :D)

'Cinnamon Pull Aparts' The whole idea of this side dish is pretty much similar to a muffin. But it's loaded with a nice fragrance of Cinnamon and one can use a fork to pull them apart. On top of that, the sweet taste is a (+). :D

Basically this is still "Carl's Junior", but it's the food that one
could get from the outlets in US.

The mother of all bread?!?

According to the Indian dictionary, the word 'Roti' means a type of bread. But what has that got to do with our post today?

'Coffee Bun' This would be their signature bun. I remember a few years back, due to the popularity of the 'Coffee Bun', in order not to lose out to the ever changing food market, almost all the bakery in the neighborhood are selling this. But what's so special about this? For a start, the outer layer was pretty crispy. In contrast to the outer layer, the inner layer was far more fluffy. As you dig into the bun, you will realize that the bun has this nice sweet taste, topped with the nice aroma of 'Coffee'. This has pretty much explains the popularity of this shop. (When I was walking past the place, I was like how can this bakery survive with limited items on the menu... =.=""" However, it seems that this shop has been around for more than 10 years, which is @.@.)

So where can you give the 'Coffee Bun' a good try?

The name of this shop would be 'Roti Mum'. They currently only has a shop in Singapore, which is located in 'IMM'.

When you are getting unlimited toppings for...

a large pizza at an unbelievable low price. Frankly speaking, I have only had it once and it already has left a big... no it's more of a huge impression on my stomach and mind. :D

'Uniquely CS' This would be the name that I have given to this pizza. There's the meaty sinful stuff like 'Bacon', 'Spicy All-Natural Chicken', 'All Natural Chicken', etc... (If you can take beefy stuff, there are several other types of toppings that you can choose too.) To balance out the meaty stuff, I have also request for numerous types of vegetables to be added too. There's 'Mushrooms', 'Jalapenos', 'Green Peppers', 'Garlic Pineapples', etc... As you can see, the surface of the Pizza was pretty much covered by different types of both colorful and interesting ingredients. Each slice of 'Uniquely CS' was covered with sweet, zesty, spicy and earthy ingredients. One of the key highlights of this pizza would be the amazing nicely tanned and crispy crust. As I took a bite off the pizza, unlike the regular pizza huts in Singapore that comes with a thick crust, I prefer a thinner and crispier crust that is loaded with a lot of delicious ingredients. (In fact I can finish a large pizza over here easily, without the need to overload my stomach with too much food. :P) Oh, by the way, you just have to pay a standard price and you will be given the privilege to ask for any types of toppings that goes into your pizza. Doesn't that seems like a dream that is too good to be true?

It's not just about the main...

Are you into French Fries and the portion that you are getting just isn't big enough to satisfy your needs? Then you should give this place a try...

'Salad' Started off with some greenly vegetables. A bit too plain for me. Would be much much more tasty if they can provide some seasoning sauce.

'Spicy Buffalo Chicken Burger Set Meal' As you place an order for a main course, you will be entitled to a plate of salad and unlimited portions of French Fries. Frankly speaking, I love the French Fries over here. Sounds a bit strange, but I would only go for French Fries that comes with no salt. I'm getting that over here too and on top of that, it seems that they would only start preparing the French Fries when a customer places an order for it. Therefore the saltless, crunchy sticks are simply far too amazing and delicious. Sadly speaking, they only have chilli sauce and mayonnaise to go with the Fries but if they have provided Tartar sauce, I might have gone ahead and place an order for my 3rd or 4th helping of French Fries. :D

One of the signatures dishes over here would be the burgers. The moment I stepped into this restaurant, the waitresses were asking, are you here for the burgers? And more than 70 percent of the orders that night were mostly burgers. Though it's not the biggest in Singapore, but the portion of this is far more bigger than than one of my favorite fast food joint in Singapore. Not only it's big, the thickness of the burger is pretty amazing too. And here comes the best part. There's an outburst of juicy meaty goodness in every single bite. Though I'm not getting the spicy touch but the mix of chewy and crunchy ingredients just simply makes this irresistibly yummy and satisfying. :D

So where can you give all these yummy stuff a try?

The 2 Wings of a Chicken...

Everyone knows that a Chicken comes with 2 wings and different chefs will come up with their own special unique formula in order to savor it to the max. Hence...

'Half Spring Chicken' set The set comes with 2 complement side dishes. We ended up choosing the 'Potato Wedges' and the 'Chilled Mash Potato Salad. As a side dish, these 2 dishes are pretty interesting. The 'Potato Salad' seems to be a mixture of normal 'Chilled Potato' and 'Coleslaw'. As I pop one of them into my mouth, there's a nice mix of crunchy bits and mashed ingredients inside my mouth. And there's also a nice mix of different tastes, which is mainly made up of the 'Potato' and 'Coleslaw'. As for the 'Potato Wedges', My friend was simply too fast for me. As I was digging into parts of the Chicken, he has managed to wipe out all the wedges within minutes. O.O This is the first time I saw him wiping out all the ingredients at this rate, so I guess the wedges must be pretty good. As for the 'Spring Chicken', though it wasn't a relatively big one, but the taste is pretty good. First of all, they didn't try to fake the size of the 'Chicken' by covering it with a thick layer of flour and tries to deep fried it. The 'Spring Chicken' over here comes with a thin layer of crispy skin and on top of that, as you took a bite off the 'Chicken', you will be pretty amazed with the moist and juicy meat. Even though they didn't coat it with some special seasoning, but this doesn't stops me from finishing the chicken, which is both delicious and not too greasy at all.

'Chicken Wings' These are the real deal. Not only they are relatively big in size, these boring looking 'Chicken Wings' can be pretty deceiving when it comes to the taste. Pretty much similar to the 'Spring Chicken', the 'Chicken Wings' ain't covered in a thick layer of flour, what it has would be a thin layer of crispy skin too. On top of that, the skin isn't too greasy and oily, which is worth another (+). Though I started off using the fork and knife, but it gets kinda annoying when I couldn't wipe out all the meat from the different corners, therefore I decided to move on and use my bare hands to break the joint and wipe out all the delicious bits, which is pretty awesome.

So where can you give the 'Chickens' a good try?

The 5 stars of Hougang...

Do take note this is a food blog and the title of this post has nothing to do with the Singapore flag.

'Grilled Fish Set' This is the 2nd time I'm giving the western food over here a try. For a start it comes with quite a variety of sides. There's 'Coleslaw', 'French Fries', 'Baked Beans', 'Garlic Bread' and a bit of greens. The sides are pretty good for a start, there's the crunchy and not too salty 'French Fries' and the 'Garlic Bread' that comes with a thin and crispy crust, but comes with a nice aroma and strong taste of 'Garlic', which deserves a (+). Unlike the 'Fish & Chips' over here, the grilled fish isn't coat in a crispy breaded layer. But the fish meat is actually pretty good. The moist and sweet fish meat isn't too soft or too hard, which is very important. And when you have it with the 'Tartar Sauce' or the 'Fried Garlic', things tend to get more and more delicious and interesting. :D

So where can you give the 'Grilled Fish' a good try?

The name of this stall would be '5 Star Corner Western Food'. It's located in the coffee shop beneath 'Blk 805 Hougang Central'.

Western from Paris?

Frankly speaking, I haven't been to Paris yet so I'm not really sure what are the cuisine that you can get at Paris. However...

'Fish with Fried Rice' I'm not so into Fries, unless I have an urge for an interesting plate of fries, otherwise I would try to avoid it. As for the Fish and Chips over here, you can choose to replace the portion of Fries with a decent portion of Fried Rice. The tasty portion of Fried Rice is a (+). Even though the soft bakes beans and crunchy coleslaw are served cold but when you mix it with the Fried Rice, they actually can blend deliciously together. :)

Fried to a delicious looking color, this looks pretty appealing. Even though the texture looks pretty appealing, but the taste is actually pretty normal and there's no Tartar sauce but for the price I'm paying I'm actually getting a hearty meal, which makes this a pretty good deal for lunch. :) In fact, some of the set meals over here comes with the choice of either Spaghetti/Fries or Fried Rice/Fries. Therefore if you are afraid that the Fried Rice might appear to be a bit too dry or bland for you, you can go for the meals, that comes with the sweet brown sauce, which can improve both the taste and the texture of the Fried Rice even further. :)

So where can you give the 'Fish and Chips' a good try?

The name of this stall would be 'Paris Western Grill'. It's located inside 'West Coast Market Square', which is located opposite, 'West Coast Plaza'.

Unique outlet of 'Astons'

Ever since they have opened their first outlet in the East side of Singapore, the outlets started popping up in different parts of Singapore over the last few years. Therefore, ever since I have knew about this unique outlet of 'Astons', I have decided to give it a try. Hence...

'Fried Fish Dinner Set Meal' At this outlet, all the main courses will come with 'X' and a side dish(either 'Baked Potato' or 'French Fries'). I ended up choosing 'French Fries' since I knew that the 'Baked Potato' of can be pretty filling. And I would really want to leave lots of space in my stomach for 'X'. For a start, I loved the crispy texture of the fish that was covered in breadcrumbs. With a texture that was so crispy, I was hoping that the meat doesn't end up to be too hard and stiff too. Luckily, the chef of 'Astons' didn't fail my expectations and they have somehow managed to prepare it such that the fish would have this crispy texture and the meat itself was pretty fresh, soft and moist. Not only the texture of the fish meat is relatively good, it can blend in with the Tartar sauce pretty good too, which deserves a very big (+).

So what exactly is 'X'? 'X' is actually the premium salad buffet that is included as part of the meal that you have ordered.

Though it's known as a premium salad buffet, but it's much more fanciful as compared to a salad bar. For a start, they have prepared more than 4 different types of soups. There's 'onion soup', 'sweet corn soup', etc... There's a good mix of different types of soup of a different texture and taste. And they have also thrown in one of my favorite side dish at 'Astons', which is the 'Whipped Potato'. You can not only go 1 scope but unlimited serving of 'Whipped Potato' over here, isn't that a good start? :) Note: the sauce and the 'Whipped Potato' are separated hence you can decide on the proportions of the 'Whipped Potato' yourself.

In order to satisfy all the customers, they have also thrown in fried stuff like 'Potato Wedges', 'Onion Rings', etc... into the buffet too. And to some, these ain't as important as the crunchy 'Garlic Bread' that comes with a nice taste and aroma of 'Garlic', that blends in pretty well with the soup too.

They have also provided a good spread for those that couldn't live without pasta or rice dishes, like me. The sauce of the pasta is so rich that I was dipping some of the deep fried finger food inside it too. On top of that, for mushroom lover, the 'Saute Button Mushroom' is a must try. Not only the mushroom are juicy, the chewy sensation is a (+) too.

After having more than 5 rounds of soup, I don't really have that much space left in my stomach for the cold dishes.

However, I still managed to grab a few scoops of the 'Potato Salad', which is also one of my favorite sides at 'Astons'. They have also allocated a small corner for cut fruits, which includes stuff like 'Watermelon', 'Pineapple', 'Honeydew', 'Grapes', etc... And that's not all...

There's always room for desserts. Though it only comes with 1 flavor only, but there's a variety of toppings that you can choose from. I love to have mine with all the small little crunchy bits. Besides for the 'Ice Cream', they have also provided free flow of beverages over here too. Personally speaking, with all the soup choices and the Ice Cream, I didn't even fell like touching the beverages at all. :P
