The last in the line...

I was hanging around this area looking for something to eat before I went for my Rainbow Cake High Tea nearby. I happened to come across this porridge stall that was about to close and I was walking away from the stall when the stall auntie suddenly shouted 'One Last Bowl of Porridge'. I immediately tell the auntie that I would take it and the story begins...

Being the very last bowl of porridge, the stall uncle mentioned that he will be giving
me all the remaining porridge. Therefore, even though I only place an order for the
smallest portion, I think that I ended up getting the biggest portion. :D Besides for
the bowl of porridge, I have also placed an order for a plate of 'Raw Fish Slices'(生鱼片).

After a bit of stirring, it becomes like this.

'Raw Fish Slices'
I only place an order for the second smallest portion but it already comes with
lots of ingredients. There's a generous portion of fresh raw fish slices, lots
of spring onions(a bit too much =.=""), deep fried shallots, chopped red chillies,
sesame seed, shredded ginger and lime. Do remember to squeeze out all the lime
juice to enhance the taste of the 'Raw Fish Slices' and mix the ingredients
thoroughly. Each individual bite comes with nice fragrance of sesame and on top
of that, there's the crispy bits of ginger and shallots. Even though there's a
mixture of butter, spicy and sour taste, but it still couldn't cover the
delicious and fresh taste of the slices of 'Raw Fish'. In other words, you are
paying a relatively low price for a heavenly plate of 'Raw Fish Slices'.

'Fish Porridge'
This is really a very big bowl of porridge. Even though I have beat the raw
egg and stirred thoroughly, the colour of the porridge still remains to be
whitish in colour. Despite of the colour, one could easily identify the various
types of ingredients floating on top of the porridge. There's spring onions,
fried shallots and lots of sliced fish. To some, the porridge over here can
be pretty disappointing especially when the porridge will be boiled to a point
where the grains were almost completely dissolved into the porridge. Therefore,
the porridge over here is pretty thick and gluey. And there's no doubt that the
taste of the porridge over here is pretty good, but whether you can accept the
texture of the porridge or not, that's a completely different issue. As for
myself, the texture of the porridge over here makes it pretty easy to digest and
at the same time, a good alternative for the kids, the sick and the elderly. :D
And at the end of the day, regardless of the texture of the porridge, something
that is delicious will still remains to be very delicious. :P

So where can you give the delicious 'Raw Fish Slices' and 'Porridge' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Zhen Zhen Porridge'(真真粥品).
It's located inside 'Maxwell Food Centre'.

A Fluffy Dessert...?

Not sure about you people out there but have you eaten a fluffy dessert before? Basically, the post today have something to do with a Fluffy Dessert. :P

'Fluffy Signature'
I have ended up giving their signature dessert a try. It comes with a small mountain
of milk flavoured 'Snow Ice' surrounded by cubes of freshly cut 'Kiwi', 'Mango' and
'Strawberry'. However, I'm not really sure what's the small black coloured balls
since the taste of the fruits are far more overpowering than the small black balls.

Anyway, I don't think that there's anything special about the 'Snow Ice' that they
are using over here. The taste of the 'Snow Ice' isn't too sweet. Anyway, I
personally find the fruits to be the main attraction of this dessert. The freshly
cut fruits are not only fresh, the 'Kiwi' are pretty sour too. When you scoop a bit
of 'Snow Ice' and pieces of 'Kiwi' and 'Strawberry' together, you will be getting
this shivering sensation that to a certain extent, it felt like 'Winter'. :P

Although this place is kinda small, but they are preparing and serving a large variety
of food over here. They also have 'Pancakes', 'Finger Food', 'Main Courses', etc...
In other words, rather than categorising it as a 'Dessert' house, I think that
it's much more appropriate to actually categorizing it as a 'Cafe'.

The name of this 'Cafe' would be 'Fluffy Dessert'.
It's located along 'Tanjong Pagar Road', which is pretty near 'Maxwell Food Centre'

Time for some tasty music again...

Before you scroll down to the main subject of this post, let's sit back and enjoy some good old Chinese Song first...

'Ye Lai Xiang'(夜来香)
Although 'Teresa Teng' isn't the original singer of this piece of music,
but no one will forget about the legendary 'Teresa Teng'.

'Chicken Cutlet'
The time is 7pm and I was hoping that I could find something nice and new to try. After
walking around the food centre for the second time, I finally spot this ordinary looking
stall selling Western Food. Despite of the number of items that they have, the long queue
is amazingly long. Well, I ended up joining the queue and placed an order for a plate of...

'Chicken Cutlet'
I'm glad that I have gone for the 'Western Food' served over here. For a start, rather
than providing the customers with packets of chilli or tomato sauce, you can simply
squeeze out as much sauces as you like from the free flow sauces 'bar'. Although it's a
'bar', it's actually 2 bottles of sauces by the side of the stall. Food wise, the 'French
Fries', itself are pretty crunchy and not too oily. Even though the chilli sauce are
pretty normal stuff, but it still blend into the taste of the 'French Fries' nicely.
Next, the chef have added a generous portion of vegetables, which includes 'Peas',
'Corns' and 'Diced Carrots'. Though it's served cold but the vegetables are nicely
done and although it's merely vegetables but it's still far more better than merely
a few leaves of lettuce or a portion of salad. The set meal also comes with a Bun too.
The chef has also provided a tube of 'Butter' for the 'Bun'. I started off cutting a
hole on one of the sides and scoop a bit of 'Butter' into the 'Bun', before cutting
the whole 'Bun' into 2 and savour it. 'Bonjour'~~~ Although this is a tedious way of
savouring the 'Bun' but you could really taste the sweet 'Butter'.

As for the piece of 'Chicken Cutlet', the crispy texture itself have scored lots of
points already. The chef has also added a scoop of specially blended sauce over it.
Best of all, the succulent piece of 'Chicken Cutlet' is fantastically delicious.
The standards of the 'Chicken Cutlet' is so high that it really makes one wonder
why didn't the chef open his own 'Western Food Restaurant'. Well, only when there's
nice chef like these that will allow us to have delicious food at an affordable
price everyday.

By the way, let's take a quick glance at the menu of this stall.

So where can you give the delicious 'Western Food' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Tasty Barbecue'(夜来香).
It's located inside 'Maxwell Food Centre'.

A Seafood Cake...

As mentioned in my previous posts, I have been going around giving all the good food that I haven't been eating frequently a good try. And I don't really want to waste my time making a trip down to 'Maxwell Food Centre' with the 'Oyster Cake' stall closed, therefore I decided to give this place a try...

'Oyster Cake'(蚝餅)
The stall owner over here is making and preparing 2 different types of 'Oyster Cake'.
There's the normal type and a special type with additional ingredients. Basically on
my 1st attempt, I have gone for the special 'Oyster Cake' and it was stuffed with 2
prawns, 2 oysters, peanuts, minced meat, vegetables and ikan bilis. And the shape of
the final product was similar to the shape of a UFO (Unidentified Flying Object).

First of all, the texture of the 'Oyster Cake' isn't too oily. As and when you take
a bite off the 'Oyster Cake', you will definitely be getting the taste of a mixture
of 2 or more ingredients. The elderly stall owner have been using fresh seafood
ingredients in the slow and tedious process of making each and every piece of
'Oyster Cake', which probably explains the delicious taste and the large customer base.
The nice mixture of all the ingredients simply make it even much more irresistible.
Basically, I have also tried the normal 'Oyster Cake', but it's not even half as
satisfying as the special 'Oyster Cake'.

Random shot of the stall and the 'Oyster Cake'.
Basically, one particular reason why 'Oyster Cake' is a delicacy might probably
be due to the fact that it's super duper rare. There's probably only 1 out of 1000++
stalls out there, that still continues to prepare and sell delicious 'Oyster Cake'.

The name of this stall would be 'Poh Hwa Fu Zhou Oyster Cake'(寳華福州蚝餅).
It's located in one of the coffee shop which is located near 'Mustafa Centre'.

    10:30am - 6pm Daily

Time for some Xlb...?

And by the way 'Xlb' isn't a facial expression. 'Xlb' means...

'Xiao Long Bao'(小笼包)
The skin is neither too thick nor too thin, but one think that I'm
pretty certain would be the taste of it. It's amazingly delicious.
Once you started popping one of them into your mouth and as you
started biting the 'Xiao Long Bao', the juicy soup and the ingredients
will burst inside your mouth and beware, these small little things
can be pretty hot. Besides for the taste, the other thing that I like
about the 'Xiao Long Bao' over here would be the skin. With the skin
that they have used in the 'Xiao Long Bao', the skin wrapping up all
the ingredients together doesn't break so easily. On top of that,
the skin, the soup and the ingredients has formed a beautiful triangle
of great taste. And if any one of them have been changed, I think that
the 'Xiao Long Bao' would not taste as great as what they have now.

Before I jump to the name and the location of this restaurant, let me start off by explaining a bit on how I knew about this place. I was working near that area close to 10 years ago and I'm getting a lot of positive feedbacks about the food of the restaurant from my ex-colleagues back then. But, the drawback would be the crowd that appear during lunch and dinner hours, which increases the amount of waiting time. In fact, this restaurant was so famous that the Japanese are common customers of this place. (:P)

The name of this restaurant would be 'Jing Hua Eating House'(京华小吃),
which is previously known as 'Qun Zhong'(群众). It's located along
'Neil Road', which is pretty near 'Maxwell Food Centre' too.

Eating a Dinosaur...

Not referring to the drink 'Milo Dinosaur' over here. What I'm going to write about today would be a kind of food that I love pretty much and that would be...

'Dinosaur Prawn Noodles'(Dry)(恐龙大虾面)
Just by taking a look at this, my jaws are dropping already. I haven't
seen prawns that are so big since the early 90s. Anyway let's set the
humongous prawns aside first. Besides for the prawns, what makes this
bowl of noodles interesting are the special paste and the other
ingredients(Pork Ribs, Vegetables, Fried Onions, Noodles) that they have
added into the bowl of noodles. Once you started stirring all the
ingredients thoroughly and started savouring the noodles, the taste is
pretty interesting. The overall taste are pretty sweet and the noodles
are pretty chewy and springy, which is pretty nice. :D On top of that,
the vegetables and the meaty stuff blend in together pretty good too.
Next, let's move forward to the bowl of soup.

Just by looking at the bowl of soup alone, simply explains a lot of stuff.
Though the colour of the soup looks pretty dull, but just by looking at
the small little bits floating on the soup means that they have added
quite a variety of ingredients in the preparation of the soup. And the
taste of it is pretty sweet and fantastic nice. The mixture of pork ribs
and prawns give the soup the wonderful great taste. Yummy. (Come to think
of it, why didn't I tried asking for another round of soup?)

Time to move back to the main attraction of the dish, which is the 'prawns'.
Though all the prawns are pretty fresh and even the prawn head are given,
but I decided to have a little bit of fun, therefore I have set aside one
of the prawns into the bowl of soup before digging into the noodles. When
I was comparing the prawns from both bowls, it seems that the 'dry' version
of the prawn seems to be much more boring while the taste of the 'soup'
version seems to be much more richer in taste. Probably I should try the
soupy version of the 'Dinosaur Prawn Noodles' the next time round. (... But
wait, which means I wouldn't be getting the nice noodles... ==""")

So where can you give the 'Dinosaur' a try?

The name of this restaurant would be 'Old House'(老屋).
It's located along 'Neil Road', which is pretty near
'Maxwell Food Centre'.

Notes:
  • Operating Hours:
    10am - 4am Daily
  • By the way, some of the specialities over there includes stuff like 'Heng Hua Lor Mee'(兴化卤面), 'Home Made Ngoh Hiong'(自制五香), etc... (Just by taking a look at all the food photos make me hungry again. :P)

Is this Shanghai style???

I haven't been to shanghai before so here's my question does Shanghai Dim Sum really look like this?

They don't have a lot of items on the menu but after giving it some thought,
I decided to go with these 2 items.

'Steam Dumplings' (left)
Most of the time, Dumplings that you are getting outside are filled with a
much larger potion of meat than vegetables, but as for this place, it's the
other way round. The taste of the vegetables are overwhelming that I didn't
even bother dipping it into a plate of vinegar at all.

'Beijing Hor Fun' (right)
As for the 'Hor Fun', it's pretty nice. By taking a look at the soup, it looks
pretty much similar to a shark fin soup. Except for the part that in this case,
the chef are too generous with the amount of eggs that was used in making the soup.
The taste of the soup is so good that I ended up finishing everything. As for the
'Hor Fun', it's neither over cook nor too raw, which gives it a almost perfect
taste. It will taste even much better when you have it with the soup. :D
By the way, ingredients that are included in this plate of 'Hor Fun' are items
like Prawns, Squid, Cabbage, few slices of meat, etc... (I think that even if
none of the ingredients were given, just the soup and the 'Hor Fun' alone are
pretty satisfying.)

And here's the menu of this stall.

So where can you try these?

The name of this stall would be 'Special Shanghai Tim Sum, Tong Xing Ju'
(上海点心小吃-同心居). This stall is located inside 'Maxwell Market'.

A syrupless Beancurd

Well, I guess most of the Singaporeans have eaten soya beancurd for Breakfast before. If I'm not mistaken, most of the soya beancurd that you are getting from a hawker will comes with a bit of sweet syrup but...

in order to get a bowl of "Soya Beancurd", are you willing to stand
behind such a long queue? This is pretty much similar to gambling.
Especially when long queue doesn't really mean that the food is
delicious let alone it's simple stuff like "Soya Beancurd".

So what's so special about this beancurd?
First of all, the "Soya Beancurd" that you are getting at this stall
is syrupless. Secondly, it's pretty much jelly like. The texture is
pretty soft and after shaking it a bit, some ripples tend to appear
on the surface of the "Soya Beancurd". Third but not least, though
you can only get cold "Soya Beancurd" at this place, but the
"Soya Beancurd" is pretty much the same as a "Soyabean" flavour
"Mango Pudding".

Taste wise, by putting a scoop of the "Soya Beancurd" into your mouth
it will slowly melt into your throat. It's soft like ice cream, but it
doesn't melt so easily under the hot sun. :) Although the taste of the
original flavour is pretty good, but the taste of the
"Almond Soya Beancurd" is so strong that it kinda makes the original
flavour looks kinda boring. :P
(How do I know? Because I have tried both flavours at one go.)

So where can you get this cold "Soya Beancurd"?

The name of the stall would be "Lan Ban Soya Beancurd"(老伴豆花).
They currently have a few stalls island wide. The main branch can
be found in "Old Airport Road Food Centre". The other branches can
be found in "Maxwell Food Centre" and "One Raffles Place".
The photos that I have shown here belongs to the main branch
that is located in "Old Airport Road Food Centre".

The attack of the clones....?

Not writing about Star Wars or what but this is related to the subject of having a Clone.

This looks like an ordinary plate of Chicken Rice, but...

the taste of the rice, the chicken... everything is pretty
the same as the infamous Chicken Rice stall a few stalls away.

Why does the taste of the Chicken Rice of both stalls so similar?
If I'm not mistaken, I think the Master Chef of the infamous
Chicken Rice stall a few steps away had set up a new stall in
the same Hawker Centre. Not sure what's the main reason behind
all these dramatic acts but either ways...

Competition between 2 or more stalls can be bad for the stall
owners but good for us consumers. O.OV

So where is this stall located?

This Chicken Rice stall is located at 'Maxwell Food Centre'.
The name of this Chicken Rice stall will be 'Ah Tai Hainanese
Chicken Rice' and the owner of this stall used to be the Master
chef of the infamous 'Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice' stall,
which is a next steps away.

Note:
  • Operating Hours: 11am - 8pm

A fishy meal for mee...

I love noodles and I hope that you will love it too. In fact, I was watching this documentary the other day and I was pretty amazed with the story of a local Noodle making factory. The owner of the factory has been making Noodles ever since he was young. Ever since he step into the Noodles making industry, the owner has been eating Noodles for a meal or two every single day for the last 30-40 years. That's pretty amazing. As for today, I am going to introduce you to one of the relative of a Noodle and that would be ....

Sliced Fish & Fried Fish Bee Hoon Soup.
Although I'm a big fan of Noodles but I don't really like to eat
'Bee Hoon'(Rice vermicelli) at all. But they are some exceptional case.
There are dishes that will taste much better when I eat it with 'Bee Hoon'.
Dishes like 'Laksa' and 'Sliced Fish soup' were good examples of these
exceptional case. These dishes will taste much more heavenly if the thick
kind of 'Bee Hoon' were prepared in it.

As for the dish that I had introduced in this post, the creamy and rich
fish soup was both delicious and worth queueing up for. On top of that,
the fresh pieces of 'Sliced Fish' and 'Fried Fish' that comes with the
soup didn't turn out to be too soggy at all. Take note of the following,
the 'Fishes' that comes with a bowl of soup were neither too hard nor too
soft, which is a pretty rare sight. Especially, when it comes to the
'Fried Fish', I have pretty bad encounters with soggy 'Fried Fish' soup before.
On by the way, if you are a fan of chilli's, you probably would want to
try out the chillis that the stall is offering. For some reason, the
taste of the chilli kinda blend with the soup pretty well.

This would be the menu of the stall.
You can either place an order for a bowl of 'Sliced Fish' or
'Fried Fish' or 'Fish Head' soup that either comes in the form
of a 'Bee Hoon' soup or porridge or just the soup only.

The name of the stall would be 'Kim Hwa(金華) Sliced Fish Bee Hoon'.
The stall is located in Maxwell market. This stall is pretty
easy to find. Just keep a lookout for all the stall with all the
amazingly long queues and you will eventually find it.

Note:
  • The operating hours of this stall would be from early morning all the way to the evening. (Subjective to the number of customers they have.) So if you really want to try the food of this stall, I would highly recommend you to either go there very early or after lunch hours. Otherwise they might be chances for you to queue for more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Your friendly neighbourhood German Sausages... (Exact Location Updated)

Sausages. Probably one of the most irresistible fast food in this food. After you've eaten it once, you will probably just keep on going and going. But what's so great about German Sausages?

Well, basically I was comparing a normal Sausage with a German Sausage and it
seems that a German Sausage was much more bigger in size and much more ...
how do I put it... Aaaaah yesh... the word would be 'Solid'.
You meat lovers out there would definitely love this.

This stall have been selling German Sausages over the past few years.
For example: Cheese Sausages, Normal Sausages, Mini Sausages... XD
On top of that, they also sell Austrian Styled breads.

So where can you find this stall?
The name of the stall would be "Erich's Wuerstelstand".
It's located near Maxwell Market in the coffee shop along 'Banda Street'.

Having a plate of Chicken Rice everyday

Is it possible to have a plate of 'Chicken Rice' everyday? That would be a question that I would ask myself. As for today, I'm going to introduce to you to another place where you can find good 'Chicken Rice'..

What makes a good plate of 'Chicken Rice'?
The following would a characteristics of a good plate of 'Chicken Rice'.
It should have a good plate of nicely fragrance and delicious rice,
crunchy and fresh slices of cucumber, spicy and delicious chilli sauce
and most importantly, delicious slices of Chicken meat.
These are the characteristics of the Chicken Rice of this stall.
It have clearly state the standards of a good plate of Chicken Rice.

So where is this stall located?
Before I move on to the step of introducing the location of the store, let us look at the queue of the stall during lunch hours. The queue of the stall is simply too long that after queueing for a few minutes, I decided to try the Chicken Rice on a different day where the queue is much much shorter.

The above would be the menu of the stall.
On top of merely 'Chicken Rice' alone, the stall also sell side dishes
like Vegetables with Oyster Sauce and Beansprout with Cuttlefish.

So where is this stall located?

It is located in Maxwell Market and on top of the location,
part of the name of the stall '天天' simply means everyday.
So probably this is a stall that serves a plate of 'Chicken Rice'
that one can continuously eating throughout a whole year. XD

Note:
  • The operating hours of this stall would be from early morning all the way to late afternoon. If you really want to try the 'Chicken Rice' of this stall, I would highly recommend you to either go there very early or after lunch hours.
  • But, if you want to try their side dishes, It would be best that you visit the stall before lunch hours where the queue is much much shorter. XD

The 4 Heavenly Snacks of Maxwell Food Centre - Part 4 - Peanut Soup

This is the last of the 4 Heavenly Snacks of Maxwell Food Centre. Rather than listing it as a Snack, I think that it would be more appropriate to recognise it as a type of dessert. Here goes introducing...

THe infamous Peanut Soup of Maxwell Market.
With the use of blanched peanuts, which gradually blend with the soup,
have increase the taste of the soup to a delicious level.
If you are there pretty early, chances that you can get a bowl of peanut
soup that contains lots of peanuts were pretty high.
Best of all, if you turn up at the stall pretty early, there will also
be a high chance of getting a bowl of peanut soup with crunchy peanuts.
It also reminds me of the dessert that contains blanched peanuts.

This would be the menu of the stall.
On top of a normal bowl of Peanut Soup, you can also
get a bowl of Peanut Soup with rice balls by topping up a bit more.

This is how the stall looks like in Maxwell Market.

Note:
  • The stall is open from the morning to early afternoon. Hence, if you want to try the Peanut Soup, I would suggest you to turn up super early, preferably like 10 or 11 am in the morning.
