Braised Soup...?

Are you getting bored by the different types of soup that you are getting out there? How about giving a bowl of braised ingredients in a pool of braised gravy a good try??? Har???

'Braised bowl of soup + Ingredients'
Unlike the typical bowl of Chinese soup that comes with a clear-less bowl
of soup, this actually comes with a brownish color soup base. And the
texture of the soup isn't thick and milky too. And it's best served with
a bowl of rice.

So let's take a closer look at the ingredients that are swimming in the
bowl of soup. Over here, you can either choose to go with the assorted
serving or choose the ingredients yourself. I decided to go with the
assorted serving the other day. It comes with ingredients like
'Water Spinach', 'Fried Bean Curd', 'Cuttlefish', 'Pork Skin', 'Pork Meat',
'Pork Belly', 'etc'... They also have ingredients like 'Chicken Wing',
'Mushrooms', etc... swimming in a big pot of braised gravy positioned
behind the counter. Taste wise, unlike the usual dark braised sauce that
gives you a super salty taste, this is very different. And it's pretty
hard for me to describe the overall sensation. It's like 50% braised
topped with some magic factor, which makes it pretty interesting and unique.

So where can you give it a good try?

Maximum number of Soups...

When one has the hunger for a bowl of Chinese Soup, where would be the best place to go? Well if you ask a hundred person the same question, you might ended up getting a hundred different answers. However, what I'm introducing today has something to do with a bowl of soup... :D

'Herbal Turtle Soup Meal'
Not sure how the bowl of soup will ended up to be, but usually I will order a bowl of
rice to goes with the bowl of soup. I still miss the good old days of soaking the bowl
of rice in the tasty soup. :D

Hmm... pretty hard to see what's inside. Let me scoop out some of the ingredients...

Just by taking a look at the ingredients that I'm scooping out of the bowl, frankly
speaking, I have difficulty figuring which is which. But one thing that I can easily
identify would be the fact that there's a good mixture of different types of turtle
meat been added into the bowl of soup. There's the gelatinous bits, the meaty stuff
and a bit of boney stuff.

Soup wise, I love the thick herbal taste that comes in every single scoop. Even
though it's a sunny day, but the tasty sensation that just get better and better
as I dig towards the bottom of the bowl. Though it's a bit bitter but there's a
nice sweet taste hidden inside the bowl of soup too. Too bad it wasn't a rainy day,
else I would have...

So where can you give this bowl of soup a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Very Lucky Turtle Soup'(狀幸運山瑞).
It's located inside 'Berseh Food Centre'.

R.I.P...... :P

It rhymes. And the post today has something to do with the word R.I.P. And it's actually not one but many many R.I.P... lol

They have populated the walls over here with lots of posters that consist of all
these interesting pick up lines. I was pretty amused with some of the posters
hanging on the wall over here. :D

Most of the customers over here are going for the ...

'Ribs'...

more 'Ribs'...

so many 'Ribs'...
They are not only preparing 1 type of ribs. There's actually 5 different types of
'Ribs' that one can try over here. And I have given all 5 different types of 'Ribs'
a good try already. :D

'Signature Hickory BBQ Sticky Bones'
If you are into thick smoked 'Ribs', this is the thing for you. Not only it's coated
with this thick BBQ sauce, the overall taste of the 'Ribs' are pretty solid too. And
frankly speaking, the sauce itself is a bit too thick for me and in fact it's so
thick that I think I will have problem finishing 1/2 a slab of this.... :|

'Garlic BBQ Spare Ribs'
Out of all the 5 different flavors that they are offering over here, I guess this is
the easiest to be accepted by everyone. And I don't find it spicier and as funky as
the other flavors that they are offering over here.

'Tuscan Baked Spicy Spare Rib'
This is the most funkiest version of 'Ribs' that I have ever tried till date. Probably
because I myself isn't a big fan of Tomatoes for a start. But as compared to the taste
of the 'Ribs' the taste of the 'Tomatoes' are far too overpowering, which to a certain
extent makes me wonder what am I eating? A chewy 'Tomatoes' or ...?

'Spicy Asian BBQ Spare Ribs'
Though it might look fiery but the appearance can be deceiving. I'm getting the nice
sweet taste of the BBQ sauce but I'm not getting the fiery sensation that I'm expecting.
Pretty disappointing for a 'Spicy Asian BBQ Spare Ribs'.

Last but not least would be my favorite, which is...
'Smoked Peppercorn Spare Ribs'
The 'Ribs' comes with this nice blend of both sweet and spicy taste, topped with a very
nice aroma too. Personally, I find this the best out of all 5 flavors. It's giving the
nice spicy sensation that I like, topped with a moderate level of sweetness, which
makes this a pretty big (+).

The texture of all the 'Ribs' over here are pretty tender and not forgetting the juicy
and chewy meat that goes around the bones. In fact, probably it's due to the fact that
I'm ordering 1/4 slab at a time, therefore I don't have any difficulty ripping the meat
and the bones apart since they are served 'fresh' too. :D

All the 'Ribs' sums up to a 'Boney Hill'...

'Red Skin Mashed Potato'
If you are hoping that this would ended up to be pretty much similar to those that you
are getting out there, you will be so so disappointed. Slightly a bit more dry than those
that comes with a sauce, the ones over here has a thicker texture and it's much more
thicker in taste too. And not forgetting much more filling too. =.="" But it comes with
the skin too, which makes this pretty indulging.

'Corn Bread'
They should categorize this as a 'Muffin' rather than a bread. The fluffy texture that
goes on top and the nice sweet fillings that rest at the bottom, simply makes this a
pretty interesting combination. Not too bad for a 'Bread'. :D

'Soup of the Day'
Seems like a rich vegetable soup to me, but I personally find the next soup to be far
more superior than this. And superior over here doesn't mean that it's richer in taste,
I find the texture to be much more better too.

'Mushroom Soup'
The creamy soup that comes with a rich mushroom taste simply makes every single scoop
better and better. I wanted to go for a second helping but unfortunately this is the
last few bowls of the day, which is kinda sad. :(

'Coleslaw'
I wanted something refreshing and cooling to act as a full stop to my pleasant dining
experience over here and this has fit in perfectly. Though this still couldn't replace
a scoop of ice cream completely, but it isn't that bad either. :)

So where can you give all these delicious mains and sides a good try?
Just a signboard...

The best pork here....

There are numerous stalls selling porky dishes over here. I have tried a few of them and this is definitely the best one. Not only this stall has the biggest range of porky dishes, it also tastes the best too.

'Pig Organ Soup'
I have actually tried almost every single item listed on their menu. There's
'Kway Chap', 'Braise Pork Knuckles', all the different porky soup, and also
'Pig Organ Soup'. Even without the bowl of soup, the different types of chilli
that they are offering over here are good enough to go with the bowl of rice
or soup. Though they are not very spicy, that the taste of the chilli are
pretty tasty, which is a (+).

The 'Yam Rice' over here are pretty ordinary. It doesn't comes with a lot of
'Yam', which doesn't excites me at all.

This is actually quite good. The uncle over here really throw in a lot of
ingredients into the bowl of soup. There's 'preserved vegetables', 'pig liver',
'meat balls', slices of pork, etc... I tried adding a piece of ingredient to
each mouthful of 'Yam Rice' but it appears that they is actually a much more
bigger portion of ingredients as compared to the bowl of rice. On top of the
tasty ingredients, the bowl of soup also comes with the nice porky taste too,
which pretty much explains why this is the most famous stall over here.

So where can you give the 'Pig Organ Soup' a good try?
The name of this stall would be '家鄉風味'.

Need a bit more effort....

I don't mind walking long distance to give different types of food a good try. However, the stall over here lacks a bit of something I guess...

'Bak Kut Teh'
Having this for lunch can be a bit too heavy for normal eaters, but since I working
nearby, I guess I should give this a try too. The preserved vegetables taste pretty
alright. The standards of the sliced chilli and chilli sauce are chilli okay too,
which makes me wonder how the 'Bak Kut Teh' will end up to be. The the looks of it,
I hope that it doesn't end up to be too pepperish.... :|

For a start, the soup isn't too pepperish, which is a great relief. But the meat
of the ribs are a bit too stiff. Since this is 'Bak Kut Teh' and in order to
enhance the taste of the soup further, they should have added the 'Pork Ribs' into
the pot of soup pretty early, I'm expecting it to be chewy rather than stiff. As
for the thing that this stall is lacking? I guess that would be 'Luck'. Positioned
directly opposite is a stall selling something close to a 'Bat Kut Teh' and it's far
more better than this.

So where can you give this a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Xing Du Bak Kut Teh'(星都肉骨茶).

Affordable Yong Tau Fu in the campus...

When I'm experiencing brain dead situations and I really couldn't decide on what I should be having for lunch, most of the time if I can hop on the correct bus, I would usually go to the canteens that are spread across the NUS campus. And this is one of my favorite options in the campus. :P

'Yong Tau Fu'
As far as I know, there are at least 3 or more canteens in the campus that are preparing
and selling this. The best part? Since you can pick and choose the ingredients yourself
you can decide the number of ingredients that you want to have for lunch. Besides for the
vast spread of ingredients that they are offering, the price that they are charging for
each individual ingredient is so low that it's too good to be true.

And in case you are not into the meaty stuff and you can't differentiate them, here's a
quick walkthrough on how you can differentiate the meaty stuff. Firstly, vegetables are
vegetables, those should be pretty easy. For the vegetables that wraps around some
ingredients, most of the time these ingredients are seafood. However if the ingredient
that is wrapped inside a vegetable is dark in color, that is very likely to be a meaty
ingredient. And the ingredients that doesn't comes with vegetable but is dark in color,
that is very likely to be a meaty ingredient too. The rest are mainly seafood ingredients.
And it's time for the interesting part.

Not that the dry version is bad, it's just that I prefer the soup version of the 'Yong
Tau Fu' much much more. Though I have requested for both sweet and spicy sauce to be
added, I'm getting the nice sweet taste, but the sauce ain't spicy enough. But
regardless it's the dry or the soup version, the standards of the ingredients still
remains to be pretty high. In fact, I think I have given all the ingredients that
they are offering over here a good try already. And most of them are pretty tasty. In
fact there were a few occasions where I was picking a bit too much ingredients that it
ended up to be a small hill surrounded with a big pool of tasty soup/sauce. :P

So where can you give this 'Yong Tau Fu' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Healthy Choice'.
It's located inside the NUS Frontier Canteen, there's actually one other stall in
the NUS Arts Canteen that I visit quite frequently, but I prefer this one much
much more.

  • Operating Hours:
    Weekdays: 07:30 - 16:00
    Saturdays: 07:30 - 15:00
    (Closed on Sundays)
  • The queue over here during the regular lunch hours can be pretty crazy. Therefore, most of the time I would try to avoid the crowd by having a late lunch. :)

Seems pretty healthy but does it taste good....

Since my favorite Curry Chicken stall isn't open that day, I decided to give something new a good try. And hence I ended up eating...

'Sliced Fish Soup'
which comes with a bowl of white rice. For a start they don't have all the
fanciful soups over here. What they have are mainly soups that are filled
with seafood ingredients. E.g. sliced fish soup, seafood soup, fish head
soup, etc...

As I pull the bowl of soup closer, I could easily identify the types of
vegetables that were added into the bowl of soup. There's 'Lettuce', 'Tomatos',
'Bitter gourd', etc... Besides for the vegetables, the portion of sliced
fish is pretty generous. Taste wise, the firm and chunky slices of fish are
pretty good. Not only it's sweet, it doesn't ended up to be pretty soggy
after spending a pretty long time, swimming(?) in the bowl of soup. Best of
all the overall taste of the bowl of soup is pretty refreshing and not too
salty which makes this pretty fantastic.

So where can you give the 'Sliced Fish Soup' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Teochew Fish Porridge'(潮州鱼粥)/

Playing with the soup culture...

Ever since the media started reporting above the trendy soups and the benefits of drinking them, it seems that more and more stalls in a food market are coming up with their own formula for their special blend of soup. However, this stall seems to be around for quite a period of time already.

In order not to waste the good ingredients that comes with the soup, I would always
order a bowl of rice to go with it, though most of the time, most of the soup stall
will only have the boring white rice... >.<""

Nope, this isn't a bowl of soup for rabbits... This is in fact...
'Spareribs soup with Mushrooms'(茶樹菇,冬菇,排骨湯)
There's a typo on the menu. It should be 'Pork Ribs' and not 'Spareribs'. A minor
typo can really stir a big joke. :P Anyway, let's move back to the food, shall we.
According to the menu, this soup is suppose to help you to build up one's health
and at the same time, enhance your protection from illness, which isn't that
important to me. Most importantly, the taste of the soup is the most important.
Loaded with a generous portion of vegetables, mushrooms and Pork Ribs, the sweet
taste of the soup is a (+). Besides for that, I wonder how much time was needed
in order to brew this bowl of soup, such that the Pork Ribs has changed into soft
bones. On top of that, though the carrots were kinda soft, but the mushrooms still
remains to be pretty chewy. Last but not least, the affordable price are simply too
good to be true. :D

So where can you give the soup a good try?
'Menu'
The above shows the menu of this stall. Though they don't really have a lot of items
listed on their menu but, the items vanish within a few hours.

Not a must to be spicy...

Probably most of the time when you decided to try this ingredient, it might ended up to be a relatively spicy dish. However, it might not be the case over here.

'Our Dinner'
After spending close/more than an hour for our orders, dinner is finally served.
Yes, we are not joking. After placing our orders and wait for approximately an
hour, we finally got our food.

'Braised Duck Meat'
This would be the main highlight that day. Not really sure how much time was
needed to prepare this braised dish, such that the taste and the color of the
braised sauce has blend into the flesh and the bones of the duck meat nicely.
Probably due to the fact that it was prepared for a pretty long period of time,
therefore one can pull out all the tasty flesh from the bones easily. Despite
of the size of that plate and the price that one has to pay for this dish, this
still remains to be a pretty good dish that one should try. But the biggest
highlight of this stall isn't the braised meat but...

'Clear bowl of Fish Soup'
This might look like your typical bowl of fish soup that you might be getting
anywhere, but there's a special ingredient hidden inside. Besides for Sliced
Fish, Sliced Tomato, Lettuce, it also has 'Sze Chuan Vegetables'... O.o""?
That ingredient not only adds a crunchy touch to the ingredients that you are
getting, it also adds a nice sour and strong taste to the overall taste of the
bowl of soup. Though I'm not getting the spicy taste from the vegetable but
this really stands out as compared to a normal bowl of fish soup that only
comes with a sweet taste. And by adding a sour taste to the soup can really
helps one to beat the heat. :P

So where can you give the fish soup a good try?
Besides for the special fish soup, they also have braised duck innards too.
I have eaten chicken and pork innards before. But braised duck innards, I
would really want to give that a good try. :P

The name of this stall would be
'Ng Soon Kee Fish & Duck Porridge'(黃順記魚糜。鴨糜).

Playing with Fishes...

Is it because of the type of fish that they have chosen over here? Or is it due to their culinary skills that might be super amazing? It's either this or that but either ways, the fish soup over here are pretty amazing.

'Batang Fish Soup'
Looking from afar, this already looks pretty appealing. For a start,
I'm really getting lots of sliced fish in that big bowl of soup.

As I pull the bowl closer, that's really quite a number of sliced
fish. I started popping one after another inside my mouth. Hmm, these
big, fat and firm slices of fish are pretty sweet. Even though it took
me a bit of time to wipe out all the fish slices but what amaze me the
most would be the texture of the fish slices still remain to be pretty
firm and delicious all the way down. On top of that, the soup base is
pretty sweet and tasty too, which makes this a pretty good lunch.

So where can you give this bowl of soup a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Hai Chew Fish Soup'(海洲魚湯).

Is this the same shop that...

used to be located in one of the coffee shops located along 'Beach Road'? One of my favorite herbal 'Bak Kut Teh' in Singapore? And there's only one way to find out...

I was comparing the photos that was taken at the place located along
'Beach Road' and this place and they look pretty similar. However,
looks can be pretty deceiving, the most important part would be the
overall taste of the dish. :P

'Bak Kut Teh'(肉骨茶)
The magical touch of the indulging great taste of the herbal
'Bak Kut Teh' do exist in this pot of boiling soup. Topped with a bit
of vegetables and loaded with lots of 'Pork Ribs', this interesting
pot of 'Bak Kut Teh' still has it's magical touch. Not only the taste
still remains to be pretty good, the fat and juicy 'Pork Ribs' are a
big (+) too. The best part would be the point where you can still go
for endless round of refills of the delicious herbal soup. However,
pretty much similar to the stall along 'Beach Road', I only go for an
extra round of soup and my whole body is actually burning up.

So where can you give the 'Herbal Soup' a good try again?
The name of this stall would be

Fishes of Friendship...

Basically, it's not like you can only order this dish in pairs or what, it just so so happen that the name of this stall has the Chinese word 'friendship'(友誼) inside. Therefore I'm giving this post such an title. :) Anyway back to the interesting part...

'Tom Yum Fish Soup with a bowl of Vegetables Rice
and a bowl of Fried Fish'
Initially, I only want to go for the 'Tom Yum Fish Soup'. But I recalled
that when I was passing by this place a few days ago, I saw lots of
customers going for the Fried Fish. Therefore, there must be a good reason
why there are so many customers going for the same dish. Hence...

These are a pretty rare find nowadays. Vegetables rice with slices of
cabbages and small diced of yam. The nice aroma of yam and the special
blend of rice, is worth giving it a try. :)

'Tom Yum Soup'
This tastes pretty funny for a 'Tom Yum Soup', it doesn't taste like
the usual 'Tom Yum Soup' at all. Though the stall owner has throw in a
lot of ingredients and the fish slices are pretty fat and yummy, but the
taste of the soup has pretty much ruined everything.

The 'Fried Fish' on the other end is marvelous. This for a start isn't
too oily at all, despite of the fact that it just left the kitchen not
long ago. On top of that, this isn't battered in a thick layer of flour
and yet the skin has this crispy touch, which is another (+). On top of
that, the portion that I'm getting for a relatively low price is amazing.
(On a separate note, I managed to finish a bowl of 'Vegetables Rice' with
this.) Best of all, the delicious taste of these firm and fresh slices of
fish, just simple makes my lunch better and better. :)

So where can you give the 'Fried Fish' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'You Yi Fish Soup'(友誼).
