Getting a set meal, Sir?

Set meals, set meals, you can get a set meal for Chicken Rice, Sliced Fish Soup, Burgers... But I would never believe that such a set meal would actually exist till the very day that I have actually seen it.

'Rojak Set Meal' This seems to be pretty much similar to the usual 'Rojak' except for a few special ingredients that they have thrown in. For example, there's cuttlefish slices and century egg. Luckily they didn't coat the century egg with the 'Rojak' sauce otherwise the taste might ended up to be pretty funky. :P

Besides for the century egg, most of the ingredients over here were covered in this sweet and thick 'Rojak' sauce. And speaking of it, the ingredients include stuff like 'Cucumbers', 'Pineapples', 'You Tiao'(Chinese doughnut), etc... Though I'm not getting the usual 'Kang Kong' but with the amount of peanuts that goes on top of the delicious spread is enough to open up my appetite big big. :D So what am I going to eat next?

So where can you give the 'Rojak' a good try?

Unique outlet of 'Astons'

Ever since they have opened their first outlet in the East side of Singapore, the outlets started popping up in different parts of Singapore over the last few years. Therefore, ever since I have knew about this unique outlet of 'Astons', I have decided to give it a try. Hence...

'Fried Fish Dinner Set Meal' At this outlet, all the main courses will come with 'X' and a side dish(either 'Baked Potato' or 'French Fries'). I ended up choosing 'French Fries' since I knew that the 'Baked Potato' of can be pretty filling. And I would really want to leave lots of space in my stomach for 'X'. For a start, I loved the crispy texture of the fish that was covered in breadcrumbs. With a texture that was so crispy, I was hoping that the meat doesn't end up to be too hard and stiff too. Luckily, the chef of 'Astons' didn't fail my expectations and they have somehow managed to prepare it such that the fish would have this crispy texture and the meat itself was pretty fresh, soft and moist. Not only the texture of the fish meat is relatively good, it can blend in with the Tartar sauce pretty good too, which deserves a very big (+).

So what exactly is 'X'? 'X' is actually the premium salad buffet that is included as part of the meal that you have ordered.

Though it's known as a premium salad buffet, but it's much more fanciful as compared to a salad bar. For a start, they have prepared more than 4 different types of soups. There's 'onion soup', 'sweet corn soup', etc... There's a good mix of different types of soup of a different texture and taste. And they have also thrown in one of my favorite side dish at 'Astons', which is the 'Whipped Potato'. You can not only go 1 scope but unlimited serving of 'Whipped Potato' over here, isn't that a good start? :) Note: the sauce and the 'Whipped Potato' are separated hence you can decide on the proportions of the 'Whipped Potato' yourself.

In order to satisfy all the customers, they have also thrown in fried stuff like 'Potato Wedges', 'Onion Rings', etc... into the buffet too. And to some, these ain't as important as the crunchy 'Garlic Bread' that comes with a nice taste and aroma of 'Garlic', that blends in pretty well with the soup too.

They have also provided a good spread for those that couldn't live without pasta or rice dishes, like me. The sauce of the pasta is so rich that I was dipping some of the deep fried finger food inside it too. On top of that, for mushroom lover, the 'Saute Button Mushroom' is a must try. Not only the mushroom are juicy, the chewy sensation is a (+) too.

After having more than 5 rounds of soup, I don't really have that much space left in my stomach for the cold dishes.

However, I still managed to grab a few scoops of the 'Potato Salad', which is also one of my favorite sides at 'Astons'. They have also allocated a small corner for cut fruits, which includes stuff like 'Watermelon', 'Pineapple', 'Honeydew', 'Grapes', etc... And that's not all...

There's always room for desserts. Though it only comes with 1 flavor only, but there's a variety of toppings that you can choose from. I love to have mine with all the small little crunchy bits. Besides for the 'Ice Cream', they have also provided free flow of beverages over here too. Personally speaking, with all the soup choices and the Ice Cream, I didn't even fell like touching the beverages at all. :P

So where can you give this unique outlet of 'Astons' a good try?

Appetizers buffet for FREE*

We, human beings are the greediest species on earth. Despite of the size of our stomach, when we are hungry, we will feel like eating different types of food. Therefore, it would be great if we can try a large variety of food at one go.

At this restaurant, you can give the Appetizers buffet a try for FREE*. It includes japanese dishes like 'Soba', 'Takoyaki', 'Chawanmushi', etc. Since it's free, the taste of most of the appetizers are pretty normal. However, there are some exceptions too. I personally find the 'Onion Steak' (Image on the top left hand corner) to be exceptionally good. The chefs have added some spicy touch to the fried crunchy onion slices. The overall taste and the texture of the onion slices are pretty good and interesting. By the way, if you really want to give the Appetizers buffet a try, there is this simple condition that you would have to fulfill. The condition requires each customer to place an order for a Japanese Set Meal, isn't that simple and easy? :P

'Eel & Clams Rice Box Set' My favourite Japanese set Meal would be 'Eel Rice Box Set'. Therefore, I ended up placing an order for this the other day. The delicious taste that you are getting when you mix all the 3 main ingredients(Eel, clams and cucumber) together are fantastically good. The crunchy cucumber and the fresh ingredients are something that one could really look forward to. (By the way, most of the set Meal at this restaurant are within the price range of $10 - $30.)

The name of this restaurant would be 'Hifumi'. The above shows the branch located in 'Plaza Singapura'.

Oily cake

An oily cake seems to be a complete joke. However, such things do exist. Introducing...

an 'Oyster Cake'(福州蠔餅). Although the size of the oyster that was used in this side dish isn't as big as a 'Hiroshima Oyster', but by adding a bit of spring onions, a bit of minced meat and deep fry all the ingredients together, you are actually creating something that was pretty unique. Though this 'cake' was pretty oily, but the taste was pretty interesting. Especially, when you can blend the taste of the 3 main ingredients(Spring onions, minced meat, oyster) together nicely. However, the drawback would be the fact that you have to eat it while it's hot and crispy. Trust me, you seriously wouldn't want to eat it when it's pretty cold and the texture of it is pretty soft. >.<""" (Which reminds me, this is suppose to a pretty common dish back then, however it seems to be pretty rare nowadays... sigh... I kinda miss the 'Oyster Cake' stall located at Maxwell Market already.)

So where can you give this oily 'cake' a try?

Singapore style pickles

Pickles are something that each and every country has. In Japan's Tsukemono, Korea's Kimchi, there's also everyone's favourite like Pickled Cucumber that you can get it all over the globe. As for myself, I think that Pickles to a certain extent are pretty much similar to appetizers. They are around to help you to build your appetite. :D

So as for today....

'Chicken Rice with Acar'
'Acar' would a type of Pickles that can be found in the South
East Asia. It's made up of ingredients like Carrots, Cucumber,
Pineapple, Peanuts, etc... Loved the sweet and sour taste of it.
Especially when there is lots of peanuts all over the 'Acar'. :D

Either ways, as mentioned earlier, Pickles are good appetizers.
And it's not like everywhere you go you can get it. The best
way to get it was probably be Chinese restaurants or probably
places that sells economical rice. After placing a plate of
Chicken Rice here, I was expecting a plate of rice with a few
pieces of cucumber and a few pieces of chicken meat. I was pretty
surprised that they are serving 'Acar' with it. To some extent,
I think that the chicken rice is pretty normal but by adding
'Acar' to it, has definitely push it to a completely different
level. If you are experiencing bad appetite without a good reason
you probably want to pop by the place and give the chicken rice
a good try. :D
(That reminds me I think it has been more than half a year since
I have last tasted 'Acar'. =.="")

The name of the stall would be 'Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice'
(紫金城海南起骨鸡饭).　It is located in 'A Village'(Alexandra Village).
