Delicacy that is dying out...

I was thinking of going to Beach Road the other day to spend a bit of money and give the delicious 'Herbal Bak Kut Teh' a try. However, it seems that they have wind up their shop and I have to look for a new alternative again... =.=

After you have gotten yourself a table & seat and once you have placed
your orders, the workers over here will be placing 2 baskets of chilli
on your table. Basically there's the bigger sliced chillies and the
smaller ones, or more commonly known as 'Chilli Padi'. Well, you can
go ahead and do a bit of D.I.Y too. Since there's both the light and
dark 'Soy Sauce' too, hence you can mix and match your favorite plate
of chilli.

On my 1st visit, I have gone ahead placing an order for this and a
bowl of white rice. I will skip the bowl of white rice and move on
to the main dish, which is...

'Special Claypot Bak Kut Teh'(狀元瓦煲肉骨茶)
This is indeed pretty special. For a start ingredients like 'Black
Fungus', 'Mushrooms', 'Baby Corn', 'Fried Beancurd Skin', 'Pork Ribs',
'Pork Liver', 'Pork Stomach' and also a bit of 'greens'. Just the
variety of ingredients that was given, it's already worth a big (+).
Not only it's served warm, the nutritious and tasty soup is worth
another (+). Best of all, the taste of the soup have blend into all
the ingredients nicely, which enhances the overall taste of each and
every ingredient. And here comes another good reason for big eaters
to patron this place. You can top up the pot of soup endless time.
And in fact, the taste for the top ups are as good as the initial
serving, which comes with a nice herbal taste, which is a (+). In fact
the taste of the 'Bak Kut Teh' is so good that...

I went back to the same place the following week after the 1st visit.
But rather than going for the same stuff again, I decided to place an
order for a bowl of 'Yam Rice' instead.

'Yam Rice'(芋頭飯)
The 'Yam Rice' over here are pretty good too. It comes with chunks of
'Yam' and 'dried shrimps' were also thrown in throughout the process of
making a big pot of 'Yam Rice', in order to enhance the overall taste
of the 'Yam Rice' even further. When I was digging into this bowl of
'Yam Rice', the fragrance that comes with it is a (+) too. In fact
when they open up the rice cooker that contains the 'Yam Rice',
there's this tempting smell floating in the air... Yummy. With this
delicious option around, I don't think I will be touching a bowl of
white rice again.

Here's a copy of the bill.
It can give you a better idea of the food/dishes that they are making
and preparing over here. By the way, they also have the 'Cze Char'
dishes on the menu too. So in case you are having dinner in a big
group, you can always order a few dishes and share them among yourself.

The name of this place would be 'Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh'(新興瓦煲肉骨茶).
It's located along 'Joo Chiat Road', the part that is located near
'112 Katong Shopping Mall'.

Thai Food Feast...

I have been invited to a food tasting event at this Thai restaurant in Katong area. Even though I'm late for the event, but I still managed to reach the place as they were about to dig into the first dish...

'Mango Salad'
A nice mix of both crunchy(peanuts, shrimps), refreshing(slices of mango)
and spicy(sliced chillies) ingredients. This is in fact a very interesting
and nice appetizer, but if you are not into spicy stuff, it can ended up
to be an murderous dish. :P Oh, by the way, I guess this is one of the most
spiciest dish of the day.

'Thai Milk Tea'
I was trying to figure out what's the biggest difference between this and
the normal 'Milk Tea', but it seems to me that 'Thai Milk Tea' seems to
have the taste of spices and they have added much more milk into this Tea.
Therefore, it ended up to be a bit fiery and sweet. :D

'Tom Yum Soup'
This might be ordinary looking but how about...

We were having 'Seafood Tom Yum Soup' that day. Over here, they not
only have 'Seafood Tom Yum Soup', they also have 'Chicken', 'Pork' or
'Prawn Tum Yum Soup' over here too. Even though it's not spicy enough
but the amount of ingredients that was added into this dish is pretty
generous. Furthermore, the 'Tom Yum Soup' over here isn't the powderish
type and it's the kind of food that can easily help you to gobble down
a bowl of rice.

'Non Spicy Grilled Pork'
The succulent 'Grilled Pork' and the special Thai sauce that comes with
it would be the speciality of this dish. Although this is nice, but this
isn't my favourite dish that night.

'Glass Noodle Salad'
As for this salad, I think that everyone ended up focusing more on the
ingredients than the 'Glass Noodles' itself. On top of that, there's
a bigger portion of ingredients than 'Glass Noodles'. And it's topped
with a 'Chilli Lime Dressing', which adds a sour and refreshing touch
to this dish itself and change this into a pretty good appetizer too.

'Olive Fried Rice'
The 'Olive Fried Rice' is pretty oily. Although lots of peanuts and
minced pork have been added into this dish, but the greasy touch
just makes it difficult for anyone to go for a second round of rice.
Unless...

'Green Curry Chicken'
you have it with this. Luckily, they are serving the big plate of 'Olive
'Fried Rice' and the 'Green Curry Chicken' together. With this thick, milky
and Sweet Curry, the gravy itself can reduce the greasy touch of the
'Fried Rice'. On top of that, the big slices of chicken and vegetables
just make the overall taste better and better as you go on and on.

'Green Curry Chicken' & 'Olive Fried Rice'

'Thai Style Steamed Seabass'
I think that I ended up loving the sauce more the fish itself. It's the
not too spicy and sour sauce that keeps me going for more and more.

'Lemongrass Drink'
The over concentrated 'Lemongrass' drink is a bit too much for me. Just
by taking a sip from this drink, I already have the taste and fragrance
of 'Lemongrass' bursting inside my mouth. Just the aroma of the Tea alone
can keep you very awake for a very long time.

'Dry Curry Pork'
This would be my favourite dish that night. Although, it's given the name
'Dry Curry Pork', but in actual fact the succulent 'Pork' have this nice
aroma and taste of good 'Curry'. On top of that, the bite size pieces of
'Pork' not only makes it easy to chew, it also acts as a pretty good
finger food too. :D

'Claypot Tung Hoon Prawn'
This is actually very good. The 'Tung Hoon'(Vermicelli) is pretty moist
and even though it's dark in colour, it's not too salty. Too bad, I have
to keep a bit of space in my stomach for the desserts, else I would have
emptied the whole claypot of 'Tung Hoon' within minutes. By the way,
there's lots of prawns inside this small little pot of 'Tung Hoon' too. :D

'Mango Sticky Rice'
I don't have any memory of myself savouring this dish back then. But the
chilled and beautiful pieces of Mango is a (+). And when you have it with
the warm 'Sticky Rice', you will be amazed with the taste that you are
getting from this combination. :) The nice mix of the soft mango and the
'Sticky Rice' topped with Coconut milk just make things even better.

So where can you give all these 'Thai food' a good try?
The name of this restaurant would be 'Baan Khun Nai Authentic Thai Cuisine'.
It's located along 'East Coast Road'.

The milky way of Laksa

Usually when I think of a bowl of 'Laksa', it should be a bowl of noodles and a strong orange colour bowl of soup. However, it seems that there are exceptions...

'Laksa'
Pretty much the same as how a Singaporean would describe a bowl of
'Laksa', you will be using a spoon to finish up the whole bowl of
'Laksa' over here. All the ingredients used in the preparing this
small little bowl of 'Laksa' are in bite size. After taking a few
bites from this bowl of 'Laksa', I come to recognise the fact that
the 'Laksa' soup was very milky. Though it's still a 'Laksa' soup,
however the sweet taste is much more stronger than the spicy taste.
And as and when you put a spoonful of ingredients and 'Laksa' soup
into your mouth, the taste of the 'Laksa' is remarkably good~~~

So where can you give this milky 'Laksa' a try?

The name of this stall would be 'Marine Parade Laksa - The Original
Katong Laksa'(正宗加东叻沙). It's located on level 1 of 'Roxy Square'.

An infamous Laksa...

No matter where you go, where you have been to and where you are staying, one will never fail to learn about the infamous 'Katong Laksa'. I have tried 'Katong Laksa' around 10 years ago in a different area, but seriously, what's so special about it?

'Katong Laksa'
Just by looking at the colour of the soup, I think that most of you
might have guessed it and I'm pretty sure that you are correct. The
soup base has been loaded with a lot of coconut milk, which makes it
to be pretty sweet. :P Similar to all the 'Laksa' out there, the
ingredients that they are using are pretty much similar. There's
cockles, prawns, bean sprout, slices of fish cakes, thick 'Bee Hoon'
and sprinkle of 'Laksa leaves'. But there are some differences too.
All the ingredients were prepared in a manner so that only a spoon
is needed in finishing a big bowl of 'Laksa'. (Probably this is one
of the main reasons why this little bowl of 'Laksa' is so famous?)

Taste wise, besides for the sweet 'Laksa' soup, the fresh ingredients
would be something that one will be looking forward to. Though I still
think that this isn't spicy enough but despite the lack of spiciness,
I can guaranteed that this is still a pretty tasty bowl of 'Laksa'.

So where can you try this 'Laksa'?
The name of this stall would be '328 Katong Laksa'.
