Not too early for some duck... :P

I was trying my luck on a weekend a few weeks ago, hoping that I could give this stall a try on a weekend. I ended up reaching the stall by 12 noon and the stall owner had already finish cleaning and he's more or less ready to go off. Disappointed, I decided to give it a try in the morning...

'Duck Noodles' (Dry)
The noodles are covered with a few pieces of boneless duck meat and
after the bowl of noodles a bit, it seems that the main ingredients
were mainly a few pieces of duck meat, bean sprouts and noodles.
How should I put it... basically, the duck meat are pretty tender
and the chilli that comes with in the bowl of noodles blend with it
perfectly. If you taste the duck meat without any stirring, it might
taste ordinary, but once you have mixed it with the noodles and the
chilli and eat it together, you will be pretty amazed how a group of
ordinary ingredients can ended up to be so tasty. :D

So where can you give this 'Duck Noodles' a try?

The name of the stall would be 'Redhill Lor Duck Rice and Noodles'.
It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

Notes;
  • Operating Hours: 9am - 12noon
  • 12noon would be a rough estimation, the stall owner was telling me that during the weekends, the business tend to be pretty good and all the food can be sold out before 11am.

Too clean to be true?

Whenever I thought of 'Kway Chap', it would most likely be the sinful pig intestines. :D But, it ain't so easy to find a pretty nice stall that's offering good and clean pig intestines, until...

Here's the basic set of 'Kway Chap' that you can get from this stall.
Although the bowl of 'Kway' can be pretty normal but...

The ingredients that are serve on a separate plate would be the main
focus today. Firstly, the ingredients were not over soaked into the
dark coloured sauce. The sauce was added to the plate after the stall
had finished cutting all the ingredients into smaller pieces. Secondly,
these ingredients are pretty clean. I was looking through some of the
intestines and there's nothing inside them. :) Last but not least, as
the ingredients were not soaked into the sauce before slicing them up,
the taste of the ingredients are pretty fresh and there isn't a mixture
of tastes. (In other words, you can easily differentiate the ingredient
that you have just pop into your mouth even with your eyes closed.)

So where can you try this bowl of 'Kway Chap'?

The name of this stall would be 'Shi Le Yuan'.
It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

How pancake should be...

And I'm not referring to the western pancakes over here. I'm referring to the Chinese pancake, which is also known as '麺煎粿' in Mandarin. And here comes...

This would be a 'Coconut-flavoured Pancake'.
Okay, I have to admit that I have taken a shot of the pancake from a
very strange angle... Either ways, this pancake doesn't comes with a
very thick pancake, which I think is the correct way of making it.
Pancake, regardless whether it's western or Chinese, should not be
something that makes you too full. It should be the kind of food that
can be eaten for leisure or fun, pretty much similar to a cupcake.
Anyway, since the skin of the pancake is neither too thick nor too thin,
the bite friendly pancake and the generous amount of fillings that was
given have come together and make it into a satisfying snack. :P

And here's the complete list of flavours that you can choose from...

So where can you try this Chinese pancake?

The name of this stall would be 'Loh Jia Pancake'(羅佳麺煎粿).
It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

Nothing to do with Justice Bao... :P

With the weather getting hotter and hotter as time goes by, I feel like going out, or going to work without putting a shirt or T-shirt on... :P But in order not to be caught for harassment, I have to focus on ice cold desserts...

'Chendol'
I was keeping a lookout for ice cold desserts in this market and
it seems that this is the only stall selling desserts at night.
Therefore, I decided to give it a try. While queueing up for the
desserts, I was pretty entertained by the disco music and the
old old videos that they are playing on the TV monitor.
Out of 20 over items, I decided to go with 'Chendol'.

Although the taste is pretty normal, but looking at the
price that I'm paying for it and the portion that was given,
I guess that I shouldn't be complaining at all. :P
(I was paying S$1.20 for the 'Chendol' that day.)

'Honeydew Sago'
First impression of a dessert can be pretty important and
this is beautifully colourful. Anyway there's a chinese
saying 'Yi Fen Qian Yi Fen Huo'(一分钱一分货). Literally means
that for every single cent you pay, you will be getting the
goods of a equivalent value. But at this place, you will be
paying a relatively low price for a relatively good dessert.
I kinda miss the days where honeydew and 'Honeydew Sago' plays
a pretty big role in my life. :P

'Red Bean Soup'
This isn't that bad. Though 'Red Bean Soup' was the kind of
desserts that requires long hours of boiling, but that doesn't
make the 'Red Bean' too soft and a bit of chewing are required in
breaking them into smaller pieces, before you digest them.
Besides for the texture of the 'Red Beans', the taste is pretty
good too. It has been a pretty long time since my last attempt
with 'Red Bean Soup' that tasted so good. :D

So where can you try this dessert?

The name of the stall would be 'Qing Tian Cold & Hot Desserts'(青天冷热甜品).
It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

can a Butter fly?

The answer will be both 'Yes' and 'No'. A butter itself doesn't have a pair of wings, therefore it cannot fly. But by putting both words together, you will get 'Butterfly' and a 'Buttefly' can fly. But how can we relate a 'Butterfly' with food?

'Butterfly' Bun
This is more commonly known as a 'Butterfly'. The main ingredients used
in creating a 'Butterfly' would mainly be dough. But it's slightly a bit
different from the 'You Tiao' that one would be having for breakfast.
A 'Butterfly' is coated with a layer of sesame seeds, which at the same
time gives the 'Butterfly' an extra fragrance and sweetness. Probably I
was there too late, therefore they only have a few items left and though
parts of the 'Butterfly' still remains to be pretty crispy but parts of
it were too soft. Either ways, the fragrance and the sweetness of the
'Butterfly' still remains to be pretty good, but I would really want to
try the 'Butterfly' that was freshly made and ultra crispy. :P

The name of this stall would be 'Xi De Li Snacks'(西得利油條).
There have a few branches island wide and the branch that I have
shown here would be the branch located in Redhill Market.

Ugly yet delicious...

It's a very bad habit to judge a person by his/her looks. The same goes with all the delicacies out there. We shouldn't be determine the tastiness of a dish, just by taking a look at it... Especially, when we come across situations like the following...

'Satay Bee Hoon'
Probably because of the looks, therefore it's not an easy task in
finding 'Satay Bee Hoon' Singapore. And finding is one thing but
how easy will it be in finding a stall that serves good 'Satay Bee Hoon'?
I guess that I'm pretty fortunate. It seems that most of the
'Satay Bee Hoon' stalls that can be found in my neighbourhood
are pretty delicious and this would be one of them. :D

Besides for the deliciously sweet peanut gravy, the ingredients are
something that one would look forward to, especially when I'm not a
big fan of 'Bee Hoon'. Ingredients like Cuttlefish, Pig Liver, Cockles,
slices of pork meat, 'Kang Kong', also known as 'water spinach',
Bean Sprouts were included in each and every plate of 'Satay Bee Hoon'.
Despite of the look of this dish, somehow the taste of this dish still
ended up to be pretty delicious.

This dish is pretty much similar to Durian. Not everyone might love it.
But I think that one should really give this a try especially when it's
not something that one could find and get it everywhere.

So where can you try this dish?

The name of the stall would be 'Bak Kee Satay Bee Hoon'(峇記潮州沙爹米粉).
This stall is located inside 'Redhill Market'.

  • Operating Hours: 11am - 7pm (Monday - Saturday)
                                9am - 5pm (Sunday)

  • By the way, if you think that their 'Satay' gravy are pretty good, you can always buy a portable packet of the 'Satay' gravy and prepare your own type of 'Satay Bee Hoon' with tasty 'Satay' gravy at home.

Pretty common, yet Rare...?

In all the bigger food centre or hawker centre in Singapore, that ought to be a few stalls that are pretty common. It can be simple dishes like Chicken Rice, Fish Ball Noodles, etc... to Western food, Fried Hokkien Mee, etc... Therefore, it have been a rather difficult task to determine which stall is the best. However...

'White Carrot Cake'
this is one of the better 'White Carrot Cake' stall that I have ever tasted.
This plate of 'Carrot Cake' is pretty healthy, as compared to the 'Black Carrot
Cake' that most people would strongly preferred, not too oily and the texture
is pretty soft. On top of that, this plate of 'Carrot Cake' isn't tasteless.
For some reason, most of the 'White Carrot Cake' that I have tried would ended
up to have either the taste of the flour or the taste of the chilli only.
As for this stall, it's a completely different situation. There's something
beyond the taste of the flour, the chilli and the egg. And it's the exact
same thing that will keeps you going on and on, until you finish the whole
plate of 'Carrot Cake'.

So where to get this relatively good plate of 'Carrot Cake'?

The name of the stall would be 'Fu Ming Cooked Food'(福明熟食).
It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

From JB to SG....

Since I haven't been to that particular part of JB, therefore I'm not really sure how the noodles over there really taste like. But...

'Wanton Noodles'
As for this particular bowl of 'Wanton Noodles', it isn't served in
a plate. The reason why I don't like 'Wanton Noodles' that are served
using a plate was mainly because the Noodles tend to be either to dry
or too wet... Therefore I still prefer 'Wanton Noodles' that are served
in a bowl. Taste wise, I loved the way they are preparing the Noodles.
It isn't too dry or too wet and it still have the springy touch. On top
of that, the amount of good and fresh ingredients that are given and
the great balance between the use of vegetables and meat are one of the
good reasons why I would be going back for more. O.OV
'Wanton' wise, I think that is rather small, but since they have given
the fried 'Wanton' and the normal 'Wanton' and looking at the price
that I'm paying, I don't think I should be lodging a complaint. :P

So where to get this bowl of 'Wanton Noodles'?

The name of the stall would be 'Pontian Wanton Noodles'(笨珍云吞面).
It seems that they have several branches island-wide, but the
stall that I have shown here is located inside 'Redhill Market'.
(By the way, 'Pontian'(笨珍) is the name of a district in JB.)

Not really a pot of Porridge...

Okay, basically I'm still an average person after all. I neither a robot nor an alien, eventually I still can get sick. Therefore, rather than keeping a lookout for sinful fried stuff, I decided to go for some simple stuff. :D

'Chicken Porridge' and 'Yam Cake'
This would be part of my dinner. A simple bowl of 'Chicken Porridge'
and a cube of 'Yam Cake'.

Let's talk about the 'Chicken Porridge' first. I love the way they
are separating the 'Porridge' and the 'You Tiao', which is a long
deep fried strip of dough. Though the 'You Tiao' that was given
isn't very crispy but at least it doesn't ended up to be too soft.
Besides for the 'You Tiao', the 'ikan bilis' are very tasty and it
sort of reminds me of the good old days where I can finish a few
bowls of plain porridge with 'ikan bilis' only. :P Though the taste
of the porridge is pretty normal but with the 'ikan bilis' that
comes with it, it has definitely boost the taste of the porridge to
a whole new level.

Next comes the 'Yam Cake'...
Although this 'Yam Cake' isn't something fantastically delicious,
but it's still pretty good. The owners have go the extra mile
cutting the 'Yam Cake' into 8 pieces. With the spring onions and
the sweet sauce and chilli sauce that can really blend together,
I think that one should really give this a try. :D

So where can you try this?

The name of the stall would be 'Porridge Pot'(一品粥)
and it's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

Handmade Noodles ... and I love it :D

Almost every single day, I will ended up to have a hunger for Noodles. It can either be Ramen, fish ball noodles, or any other types of noodles. As long as it's noodles, my stomach will always have some room for it. :D

Here comes the menu for the day:
Shanghai 'Xiao Long Bao'(小笼包)
Every single bite off this 'Xiao Long Bao', you can easily identify
the fact that they are making the skins of the 'Xiao Long Bao'
themselves. The skins are pretty thick and unbalance, which makes
it pretty hard for the soup and the ingredients to drop... :|
(Which kinda defeats the purpose of eating 'Xiao Long Bao'.)

'Spicy Ramen With Meat'(水煮肉片拉面)
They are making the noodles themselves too. One of the helpers at
the stall was demonstrating the arts of noodles making. I was
looking at him making lump after lump of noodles and that's
pretty amazing for me. :) Either ways, the noodles ended up to be
pretty fine and delicious. Though the thickness of the noodles
wasn't evenly spread and some of them were slightly fatter, but
nonetheless, it still pretty delicious. As for the soup itself,
it isn't just chilli oil only. Seems that they have added a large
variety of ingredients and spices in order to achieve this
spicy bowl of ramen soup. The soup was full of small fine
particles and it's pretty nice. I ended up finishing the whole
bowl of soup eventually. As for the slices of pork that was
added to this bowl of ramen, the taste is pretty normal, but
I think that fish slices can blend with the soup and the
noodles better.

So where to get this simple bowl of chinese ramen?

The name of this stall would be 'Rong Xing La Mian Xiao Long Bao'
(荣兴拉面小笼包). It's located inside 'Redhill Market'.

The evil side of me... ?

Imagine this, the time now is pretty close to 9pm at night and more than 75% of the shops in a market were closed. You were taking a stroll through the market and you suddenly saw a lot of people queueing outside a stall. So what makes this stall so special that it can attracts so many customer at night?

Queue of people outside the stall after 9pm...
The queue still remains to be pretty long even after I
have finish eating my dinner that was bought from this store...
Usually, I will have a sense of satisfaction if I have queued up
and gain something. Then I will start laughing at the people behind
me. (Of course, I'm not laughing in front of them but in my mind.
Whahahahaha~~~~~~~ Eventually, I'm not a perfect person after all.:P)

Well, probably this might be one of the good reason
for the super long queue of customer. The price for the
food over here is pretty affordable. (A plate of 'Bee Hoon'
or 'Fried Kuey Teow' + another 1 or 2 ingredients still
ended up to be far more cheaper than a bowl of noodles, or
a plate of economy rice.)

...Time to dig in... :P
a very big + for the service that I'm getting from this stall.
They will automatically cut all the ingredients into smaller
and friendlier sizes. (This includes the Z-shaped chicken wing.)

Taste wise, the fragrance and the taste of the 'Fried Bee Hoon'
is pretty good and to some extent, the 'Fried Kuay Teow' looks
pretty dull and boring to me. Ingredient wise, the fish cake
is pretty normal and its something that you can get everywhere,
but I love the Chicken Wing. The skin/texture of it is pretty
crispy and it isn't too oily. On top of that, the skin isn't
too burnt. :D (No wonder, trays of chicken wings were vanishing
at a rapid speed, even though there's another helper preparing
and cooking chicken wings only and it just doesn't seems to be
sufficient. [Economics = Demand > Supply?])

So where to get this?

The name of the stall will be 'Yan'(焱). This stall is located
inside 'Redhill Market'.
Notes:
  • Store is closed on Monday.
  • Try to start queueing for the food as soon as possible, especially when I have seen numerous customer queueing up for more than 5 packets of 'Fried Bee Hoon' and a large packet of 'Chicken Wing'.

Beyond the ordinary... plate of economy rice

How good can a plate of economy rice be? That will be the main subject today. :D As for everyone out there, there ought to be a day or two that you will have some trouble choosing what to have during lunch or dinner time. Same goes for myself. I have such a problem too. Therefore in order to overcome difficult situations like this...

'Economy Rice'
Usually, I don't find a point blogging about Economy Rice, especially
when most of them tasted the same. As for this place, I guess the main
focus will be on the 'Pork Chop'. Though it wasn't a very big slice
of 'Pork Chop', but the meat itself is pretty crunchy and the moment
you put a slice of it into your mouth, both the nice fragrance and
taste of the 'Pork Chop' will blow you away. :P

As for the 'Sotong', also known as 'Squid', tastes pretty good too.
Dipping the chewing 'Sotong' into the Chinese curry had never felt
so goo. Although this is merely Chinese curry, but it's slightly a
bit watery and it can blends in with all the ingredients nicely. :D

So where to get this?

The name of the store will be 'Redhill Curry Rice' and it's located
in 'Redhill Market'. By the way, this store is facing the main road.

Note:
  • Operating Hours: Mon - Sat (10am - 9:30pm)
  • Take note, the price that you are paying for a normal plate of economy rice over here can be slightly more higher than the other places.
