Quite a variety....

Though I don't dine at a vegetarian stall very often and most likely there's going to be the same few dishes that would be popping up in my mind when I'm talking about 'Vegetarian Food' and 'Hawker Centre'... But...

'Vegetarian Economical Meal'
I was getting half a portion of Fried 'Bee Hoon' and 'Kway Teow' as a base.
And on top of that, I'm getting ingredients like Mock Meat, Mock 'Char Siew'
and 'Popiah'. Even though, as compared to the usual 'real' stuff, the taste
of these dishes might lose out a lot, but they are actually preparing quite
a vast variety of dishes over here. There's 'Curry Vegetables', 'Potatoes',
'Long Beans', etc... And most of them are freshly prepared. Not too bad for
a stall that was hidden in a 'Hawker Centre'. Besides for the above, you can
also order 'Cze Char' dishes over here too. Though they don't have a very
big 'Cze Char' menu but, they do have the common dishes. :)

So where can you give the dishes a good try?
The name of this stall would be "Mei Jing Vegetarian Food(美景美食)".
This is located inside 'Beo Crescent Market and Food Centre'.

This isn't Curry lor....

That's correct. This isn't Curry. This is merely...

'Satay Bee Hoon(Rice Vermicelli)'
Come to think of it, this is actually a type of fusion food. Especially when
one would be dipping the satay stick into the 'Satay Gravy'. Frankly speaking,
I don't think the people living in the past would believed that such an
delicacy would appear in the modern world.

For a start, the overall texture of this plate of 'Bee Hoon' is slightly a
bit too watery. Though it does comes with a light 'Satay gravy', but it's
simply not nutty enough. But it terms of ingredients, it does comes with a
lot of choices. There's ingredients like 'Kang Kong', 'Cockles', 'Cuttlefish',
a bit of meaty ingredients but.... 'Pork Liver' is missing. Though the sweet
taste is there, but as mentioned earlier, the nutty sensation is missing.
Even though the generous portion of ingredients have make things better but
in overall, it's pretty normal only. :|

So where can you give the 'Satay Bee Hoon' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Clementi Hong Kee Villa'(宏記食家樂園).
It's hidden inside 'Clementi Market and Food Centre'.

A cheaper version of ...

If you are into 'Xing Hwa' dishes and you don't have the budget to step into a restaurant, then you would probably want to give the following alternative a good try.

'Xing Hwa Fried Bee Hoon'(兴化炒米粉)
Frankly speaking, I'm not so much into Bee Hoon(Rice Vermicelli). I prefer Noodles
much much more. But after giving the 'Xing Hwa' version a good try, I think I'm
pretty okay with this. Probably I'm into peanuts and seafood, therefore I can
accept this dish pretty easily. Besides for the generous load of ingredients that
include 'vegetables', 'peanuts', slices of 'fish cake', 'prawns', 'seaweed',
'clams' and also slices of meat. On top of that, you can also give their special
blend of chilli a good try.

The number of ingredients that was added into this dish, are good enough to attract
one's attention. Taste wise, after pouring in all the different types of chilli,
I'm getting these nice tasty sparks inside my mouth. On top of that, the fried rice
vermicelli ain't that dry, in fact they still have this moist touch till the very
very last mouthful of it. And on top of that, probably due to the ingredients that
was thrown into this plate, therefore every single mouthful also comes with a nice
sweet taste too, which is worth a very big (+).

So where can you give this delicious dish a good try?
The name of this place would be 'Fu Zhen Seafood Restaurant'(福珍海鲜园).
It's located in the coffee shop located beneath 'Blk 283 Bukit Batok East Ave 3'.

Being focus is good...

Even though this is a pretty small Food Centre, but they do offer a pretty big variety of good food over here. Besides for local delicacies, one could easily find rare dishes like 'Turtle Soup' too. :). As for the post today...

'Laksa'
Being the only stall selling 'Laksa', the business of this stall is
remarkably good... no I mean great. Pretty much similar to all the delicious
bowls of 'Laksa' out there, this affordable bowl of 'Laksa' comes with a tasty
bowl of sweet, milky and spicy gravy. Topped with ingredients like sliced
'fish cake', 'cockles', 'bean curd puffs' 'beansprouts' and not forgetting the
'thick rice vermicelli'. The bowl of 'Noodles' was topped with a spoonful of
spicy 'Sambal chilli' and garnished with Vietnamese coriander, or more commonly
known as 'Laksa Leaf'. Even though just by providing a spoonful of 'Sambal
chilli' isn't strong enough to fire me up? But the overall sweet and tasty
sensation is a guaranteed. As I mixed all the ingredients together, besides for
the chewy sensation, the taste of the ingredients that have absorbed the tasty
gravy just simple makes it almost irresistible. In my own opinion, I think that
this is one of the die die must try dish in Singapore. :P

So where can you give this dish a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Guang Fa Laksa'(廣發叻沙).
It's located in 'Havelock Road Cooked Food Centre'.

No Queue = Big Queue?

This stall might appear to be pretty harmless at first but once you hand your orders over, you will be surprise with the number of invisible customers that are standing ahead of you... =.="""

'Yong Tau Fu'
For a start, each individual ingredient over here is S$0.60. This is
relatively high as compared to all the other 'Yong Tau Fu' stalls out
there. However, besides for the normal stuff that you can get at a
normal 'Yong Tau Fu' stall, they have specially made ingredients too.

In the end, I'm ended up with this.

For a start, they have separated the ingredients nicely. Once you
started mixing all the noodles and the ingredients together, the
heavenly sensation is a big (+). Every single bite comes with a nice
mixture of chewy and crunchy ingredients topped with a nice blend of
spicy and sweet sauce. Best of all, the ingredients that were
separated into the bowl of noodles are mostly ingredients that will
end up to be soggy when it's served in a bowl of soup. In fact,
I ended up finishing the whole bowl of noodles + ingredients without
even touching the bowl of soup + ingredients. :P

As for the bowl of soup, it comes with a strong and nice taste of
soya beans. The original taste of the soup is pretty sweet, which is
something that I like. However, it would be great if I can add a bit
of small sliced green chillies to spice up the overall taste of the
soup a bit more. :P As mentioned earlier, the choice of ingredients
over here are pretty good. The ingredients that were added into the
bowl of soup didn't end up to be pretty soggy and the sweet taste
of the soup can blend with the ingredients nicely.

So where can you give the nice 'Yong Tau Fu' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Rong Xing Yong Tau Fu'(榮興酿豆腐).
It's located inside 'Tanjong Pagar Market and Food Centre'.

Opening Hours:
  • 07:00 - 14:30
(Closed on Sundays and Public Holidays)
  • Things can get pretty scary when there are more than 20 invisible customers that are standing in front of you. So either you have to be pretty early or you have to endure with the long queue... :P(Although it's a bit costly otherwise I couldn't imagine how long the queue will ended up to be if the price of each ingredient has been lowered... =.=""")

Hakka Style...

Since my current workplace is located near this gem hidden in a hawker centre nearby, I decided to give it a go. :D

'Hakka Yong Tau Fu'(客家娘豆腐)
So what's so special about 'Hakka Yong Tau Foo'?
Well for a start, rather than stuffing most of the ingredients with fish paste,
they are stuffing the ingredients with meat paste. Hence, besides for the usual
bitter gourd with fish paste, they also go all the way out making bitter gourd
with meat paste. On top of that, the staff owners have also gone the extra mile
frying some of the ingredients. For example: fried capsicum, fried bitter gourd,
etc... So basically, although every single ingredient might appear the same, but
the filling and the overall taste of the ingredient can differ. What I love best
about the food over here would be the soup. Although the clear soup might look
ordinary, but the generous portion of green vegetables that was added and the
super nice taste of the soup itself have definitely caught my interest. I think
that soybean was one of the ingredients that was added into the soup, but it
doesn't seems to be so simple. There's simply depth in the soup base, I think.

Although I'm not a big fan of rice vermicelli, but the sauces that was added into
the bowl of vermicelli have definitely helps a lot. The overall dining experience
is pretty nice. The sweet and spicy taste is definitely worth trying. :D
(By the way, I think they are making their own sauces, because I don't think
the taste of the sauces reminds me of anything out there.)

So where can you give the 'Hakka Yong Tau Fu' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'The Hakka Yong Tau Fu Stall'(客家娘豆腐).
It's located inside 'Ghim Moh Market and Food Centre'.

Notes:
  • Opening Hours:
    From 08:30am till 14:30pm
    (Closed every Mondays)
  • Take note, during lunch hours, the queue at this stall can be pretty crazy. Hence, it ended up to be a matter of either you go there pretty early or you don't.
  • By the way, ignore the queue over here. It's probably a 'fake' queue of people crowding around the stall waiting for their food. You should take a bowl of ingredients and pass it to the auntie standing next to the stall and tell her how would you want it to be prepared. She will pass you a piece of paper with a queue number written on it. And you can go around the food centre sourcing for more yummy stuff while waiting for the food. Just remember to pick up your precious bowl of 'Yong Tau Fu' afterwards.

A sister of Laksa

Today, I'm going to introduce you to a sister of a Singapore delicacy 'Laksa'. Although, they might look alike but the ingredients used in both dishes and the taste of both dish were slightly different.

Let us proceed on to the step of photo viewing... :P
Introducing 'Curry Chicken Bee Hoon (Rice Vermicelli)'.
Let me start off introducing the ingredients first.
A bowl of 'Curry Chicken Bee Hoon' includes slices of chicken,
potatoes, bean curd, bean sprouts and also Thick Bee Hoon.
Basically just by taking a look at the ingredients used in both
'Laksa' and 'Curry Chicken Bee Hoon', you can easily spot the
similarities between both dishes. The biggest difference in both
dishes would be the soup base. As potatoes were added to the soup
base to a bowl of 'Curry Chicken Bee Hoon', it have also reduce
the spicy taste of the dish. Hence it was less spicy than the 'Laksa'.
But basically the taste of the soup base was pretty much similar
to the soup base of a bowl of 'Laksa' especially when the ingredients
used to make the soup base of both dishes were similar and the only
difference would be the proportion of the ingredients used to prepare
the soup base. So for those who cannot stand spicy food, 'Curry
Chicken Bee Hoon' would be a good alternative for the delicacy 'Laksa'.

So what is the name of the store that prepares the delicacy shown in this post?
The name of the stall would be 'Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee (亚王咖喱鸡米粉麺)'. It is located at one of the corners on the second floor of 'Hong Lim Market & Food Centre'.

Some information on 'Ah Heng Curry Chicken Bee Hoon Mee':
  • Don't forget to add the chilli to the dish if you are a fan of spicy food.
  • They were opened on late afternoons of Sundays so it shouldn't be that difficult for you to give this dish a good try.

Some information on 'Hong Lim Market & Food Centre':
  • Besides for the dish that I had introduced in this post, some other delicacies that can be found in 'Hong Lim & Market Food Centre' includes the Duck Rice, Crayfish Ipoh Hor Fun, Fired Kway Teow, Fish Ball Noodles, etc...
  • Most of the stores will only be opened during lunch hours and probably Mondays to Saturdays only. And some of stalls had a limited number of dishes that they can prepare each day so don't be too surprise by the fact that some stalls had already closed for the day even when you reach there at around 12 noon. Try harder next time.

A DIY meal (Closed)

Ever had the problem of don't feel like eating parts of a meal and feel like eating parts of the same meal? For example: I have the urge of eating Fish Ball Noodles Soup but I want to have it with rice. Seems like mission impossible but that isn't such a difficult task at all. Here comes...

a bowl of 'Yong Tau Hu'.
This is a bowl of 'Yong Tau Foo' with Laksa Gravy.
So what's a 'Yong Tau Foo' anyway?
Basically, a 'Yong Tau Foo' stall will give you the option of
choosing and selecting the ingredients that you feel like eating.
After selecting the ingredients, you will be given a choice of having
it in a soupy or a dry manner and on top of that, you will also be
given the choice of having it with either a bowl of Rice or Noodles
or Bee Hoon (Rice Vermicelli) or even Yam Rice.
(I guess that should more or less explains the DIY title. :P)

The above would be a bowl of 'Yong Tau Foo' that comes
with a bowl of clear soup and a bowl of Rice.
On be the way before I move on, take note that there are some
special ingredients that you can only find at a 'Yong Tau Foo' stall.
For example: Green/Red chillies stuffed with Fish Cakes (this
is one of my favourites), Bean Curd stuffed with Fish Cakes,
bitter gourd, etc.

The above would be a bowl of 'Yong Tau Foo' that comes
with a bowl of clear soup and a bowl of Yam Rice.
I like it especially when I can have it with a small plate of Chilli.

So where is this stall located?

It's located Kim Tian Road. It used to be the eating place that
I frequent the most back then. I was passing by the place the other
day, hence I decided to give it a try again. Although the prices
have increase a bit but for the sake of the fresh ingredients and
a good meal, I don't mind paying a bit more.
Oh, by the way this is a 24/7 stall so you can pop by the place
at any part of the day of night, which sort of reminds me of the
late night gathering that I have been having at this place back then. XD

A fishy meal for mee...

I love noodles and I hope that you will love it too. In fact, I was watching this documentary the other day and I was pretty amazed with the story of a local Noodle making factory. The owner of the factory has been making Noodles ever since he was young. Ever since he step into the Noodles making industry, the owner has been eating Noodles for a meal or two every single day for the last 30-40 years. That's pretty amazing. As for today, I am going to introduce you to one of the relative of a Noodle and that would be ....

Sliced Fish & Fried Fish Bee Hoon Soup.
Although I'm a big fan of Noodles but I don't really like to eat
'Bee Hoon'(Rice vermicelli) at all. But they are some exceptional case.
There are dishes that will taste much better when I eat it with 'Bee Hoon'.
Dishes like 'Laksa' and 'Sliced Fish soup' were good examples of these
exceptional case. These dishes will taste much more heavenly if the thick
kind of 'Bee Hoon' were prepared in it.

As for the dish that I had introduced in this post, the creamy and rich
fish soup was both delicious and worth queueing up for. On top of that,
the fresh pieces of 'Sliced Fish' and 'Fried Fish' that comes with the
soup didn't turn out to be too soggy at all. Take note of the following,
the 'Fishes' that comes with a bowl of soup were neither too hard nor too
soft, which is a pretty rare sight. Especially, when it comes to the
'Fried Fish', I have pretty bad encounters with soggy 'Fried Fish' soup before.
On by the way, if you are a fan of chilli's, you probably would want to
try out the chillis that the stall is offering. For some reason, the
taste of the chilli kinda blend with the soup pretty well.

This would be the menu of the stall.
You can either place an order for a bowl of 'Sliced Fish' or
'Fried Fish' or 'Fish Head' soup that either comes in the form
of a 'Bee Hoon' soup or porridge or just the soup only.

The name of the stall would be 'Kim Hwa(金華) Sliced Fish Bee Hoon'.
The stall is located in Maxwell market. This stall is pretty
easy to find. Just keep a lookout for all the stall with all the
amazingly long queues and you will eventually find it.

Note:
  • The operating hours of this stall would be from early morning all the way to the evening. (Subjective to the number of customers they have.) So if you really want to try the food of this stall, I would highly recommend you to either go there very early or after lunch hours. Otherwise they might be chances for you to queue for more than 20 to 30 minutes.

Sometimes, a change is needed :D

After a month of crazy eating, especially after the numerous visits that I had made to Tonkichi, I think it's time for me to try something that is lighter. Hence I decided to have a go with vegetarian food. Though, I'm not a super big fun of vegetarian food, it doesn't mean that I hate eating vegetarian food. This reminds me... never mind I will try writing about the other vegetarian food sooner or later. Let's focus on this one first. :D When it comes to vegetarian food in Singapore, your best option will be 'Fortune Centre' in Bugis area.

Back then, I always thought that there were only restaurants or eating places on level 1, but I was wrong. Eateries were available upstairs also.

This eating place is located on the 2nd floor of 'Fortune Centre'
and this is my first visit here.

Whao... I'm amazed with the chef here. This doesn't look like a vegetarian food at all.
It looks similar to the minced meat noodles that you can find outside.

I haven't been eating this for a very long time, hence it's very hard for me to describe it.

I don't know how the chef manage to do it, but the taste of the soup of the laksa
were pretty close to those that I had tried outside in the hawkers.

Actually, my friend had also ordered a plate of 'Wanton Noodles' but I had forgotten to take the photo of the dish. The most disappointing part is the 'Wanton Noodle' also doesn't look like a vegetarian dish at all. Probably, I will try the 'Wanton Noodle' when I visit the place again.

Note: Click here for the map of 'Fortune Centre'.

Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙) at Tanglin Halt Market, Singapore

I am not here to promote the song 'Wei Yi (唯一)' by the chinese artiste 'Lee Hom, Wang (王力宏)', but the name of the store at Tanglin Halt Market was indeed 'Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙)'. According on my taste bud, I felt that this was probably the best Laksa that I had eaten so far. It was much much delicious than the all time famous Katong Laksa.

Similar to my earlier post here are some of the photos that I had taken.

Photo of Tanglin Halt Market

Photo of Interior of Tanglin Halt Market (1)

Photo of Interior of Tanglin Halt Market (2)

The Duck Noodle at Tanglin Halt Market was quite delicious also,
but not as good as...

The one and only 'Weiyi Laksa (唯一辣沙)' store at Tanglin Halt Market.

They have a few variety of Laksa and although the soup and noodle is the same,
but the ingredients for the Laksa were completely different.
You can choose the combination that suits you the best.
As for myself, the choice of 'Chicken and Fried Bean Curd'
had been my all time favourite but I decided to go for...

a bowl of Laksa with Chicken, Cockles, Fried Bean Curd and Prawns

Let's take a closer look. (I'm on fire... Whaooooooooo~~~~~)

Satisfaction always come so easily and for me the greatest
satisfaction in life comes from delicious food itself.

The queue was there even at around 8am in the morning.

More Information about 'Wei Yi Laksa (唯一辣沙)':
  • It closes at every Monday and Friday
  • It opens the store at 5.30 am in the morning

More Information about Tanglin Halt Market:
