Here comes another Duck...

Since I decided to go all out giving the different Hawkers Centres a good try and there's a free shuttle going here, I decided to go with the crowd too. :)

'Duck Rice Set Meal'
For a start, the appearance of this set meal looks pretty appealing. In
fact as compared to a normal plate of 'Duck Rice', the set meal comes with
additional ingredients like 'Braised Egg' and 'Dried Beancurd'. And it's
time to dig in. :) Like the previous place that I have tried, the 'Soup'
over here also comes with a nice 'herbal taste', and the 'chilli paste' is
pretty thick and tasty too. :)

As for the plate of rice, it isn't that bad. Not only the gluey gravy is
pretty sweet and tasty, it blends in with the other ingredients pretty
nicely too. The chewy and thick slices of duck meat are pretty tasty too.
Though some might prefer the taste of the 'Smoked Duck', but the braised
duck over here isn't that bad either. :D

So where can you give this a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'He Ji Braised Duck'(合記).
It's located inside 'West Coast Market Square', which is
located opposite, 'West Coast Plaza'.

Braised Soup...?

Are you getting bored by the different types of soup that you are getting out there? How about giving a bowl of braised ingredients in a pool of braised gravy a good try??? Har???

'Braised bowl of soup + Ingredients'
Unlike the typical bowl of Chinese soup that comes with a clear-less bowl
of soup, this actually comes with a brownish color soup base. And the
texture of the soup isn't thick and milky too. And it's best served with
a bowl of rice.

So let's take a closer look at the ingredients that are swimming in the
bowl of soup. Over here, you can either choose to go with the assorted
serving or choose the ingredients yourself. I decided to go with the
assorted serving the other day. It comes with ingredients like
'Water Spinach', 'Fried Bean Curd', 'Cuttlefish', 'Pork Skin', 'Pork Meat',
'Pork Belly', 'etc'... They also have ingredients like 'Chicken Wing',
'Mushrooms', etc... swimming in a big pot of braised gravy positioned
behind the counter. Taste wise, unlike the usual dark braised sauce that
gives you a super salty taste, this is very different. And it's pretty
hard for me to describe the overall sensation. It's like 50% braised
topped with some magic factor, which makes it pretty interesting and unique.

So where can you give it a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Loh Mei Specialist'(湿卤味专家).
It's located inside "People's Park Complex Food Centre".

Who is Uncle Bern?

Some might wonder who is 'Uncle Bern'? Though most of us might have no idea who he is. But you might have eaten some of his earlier creations ('Botak Jones') before.

"Big Bern’s Fish & Chips"
Since I am given the chance to choose my own sides, I decided to go with the
'French Fries' and 'Double Baked Cheese Potatoes'(Mashed). For a start, the
'Potatoes' are pretty interesting. It also comes with onions which pretty
much explains why there's a crunchy touch on top of the mushy potatoes
texture. Not too bad for a start. The French Fries that comes with it are
pretty crunchy too. Though the 'Tartar sauce' isn't crunchy and delicious
enough, but the slices of 'Fried Fish' are worth a big (+). Not only they
are coated with a nice layer of bread crumbs, the flesh that was wrapped
inside it are pretty firm too. And not forgetting the generous portion
that comes with it. :D Not too bad for a dinner. :)

Their menu looks pretty interesting too, especially when they are offering a
much more bigger selection of food as compared to 'Botak Jones'.

So where can you give the food a good try?
The name of this stall would be "Big Bern's American Grill".
It's located inside a industrial canteen located at 'Toa Payoh North'.

Quite a variety....

Though I don't dine at a vegetarian stall very often and most likely there's going to be the same few dishes that would be popping up in my mind when I'm talking about 'Vegetarian Food' and 'Hawker Centre'... But...

'Vegetarian Economical Meal'
I was getting half a portion of Fried 'Bee Hoon' and 'Kway Teow' as a base.
And on top of that, I'm getting ingredients like Mock Meat, Mock 'Char Siew'
and 'Popiah'. Even though, as compared to the usual 'real' stuff, the taste
of these dishes might lose out a lot, but they are actually preparing quite
a vast variety of dishes over here. There's 'Curry Vegetables', 'Potatoes',
'Long Beans', etc... And most of them are freshly prepared. Not too bad for
a stall that was hidden in a 'Hawker Centre'. Besides for the above, you can
also order 'Cze Char' dishes over here too. Though they don't have a very
big 'Cze Char' menu but, they do have the common dishes. :)

So where can you give the dishes a good try?
The name of this stall would be "Mei Jing Vegetarian Food(美景美食)".
This is located inside 'Beo Crescent Market and Food Centre'.

Maybe the owner's surname is Lim?

The weather is a bit too hot for you to handle? How about a dessert or two to beat the heat?

'Beancurd'
Though they are selling the sweet and smooth beancurd over here, but that isn't the
most interesting point about the dessert over here.

'Grass Jelly with Gingko Nuts'
Dessert wise, they are only selling a few different types. But on top of the basic
deliverable, you can top up several other types of ingredients to it. There's stuff
like 'gingko nuts', 'ginger', 'attap seeds', etc... Though I loved the bitter taste
'Grass Jelly', but I don't mind adding a few other types of ingredients and add an
additional taste to it.

So where can you give the desserts over here a good try?
The name of this stall would be "Uncle Lim's Beverages".

This isn't Curry lor....

That's correct. This isn't Curry. This is merely...

'Satay Bee Hoon(Rice Vermicelli)'
Come to think of it, this is actually a type of fusion food. Especially when
one would be dipping the satay stick into the 'Satay Gravy'. Frankly speaking,
I don't think the people living in the past would believed that such an
delicacy would appear in the modern world.

For a start, the overall texture of this plate of 'Bee Hoon' is slightly a
bit too watery. Though it does comes with a light 'Satay gravy', but it's
simply not nutty enough. But it terms of ingredients, it does comes with a
lot of choices. There's ingredients like 'Kang Kong', 'Cockles', 'Cuttlefish',
a bit of meaty ingredients but.... 'Pork Liver' is missing. Though the sweet
taste is there, but as mentioned earlier, the nutty sensation is missing.
Even though the generous portion of ingredients have make things better but
in overall, it's pretty normal only. :|

So where can you give the 'Satay Bee Hoon' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Clementi Hong Kee Villa'(宏記食家樂園).

A bit too pale...

Usually there would be a good mix or colors, but isn't this a bit too pale...???

'Sliced Fish Hor Fun(A type of Rice Noodles)'
From the appearance, isn't this a bit too light in color? A usual plate of 'Hor Fun'
would have much more brownish in color, especially the gravy, which is even much
much more brownish in color. After adding a bit of sliced green chillies and chilli
padi, it's time to dig in.

Unexpectedly, the sliced fish isn't soggy at all and it still have this firm tasty
texture. And the gravy has blend in nicely with all the ingredients, which has added
this sweet taste to the whole dish. As for the 'Rice Noodle' itself, on top of the
sweet taste, it also comes with a nice fragrance of stirred fried food coming from
the wok. And it makes me wonder how many eggs were used in one single plate of 'Hor
Fun' over here since they's a good mix of beaten egg in each and every spoonful of
the gravy.

So where can you give the food a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Kee Hock'(旗福).
It's hidden inside 'Clementi Market and Food Centre'.

Not just Honey...

I still can remember the length of the queue when they have opened the first outlet in Singapore. The queue outside the first outlet just doesn't seems to go away...

'Pandan Gula Melaka'
This reminds me of the Mr. Softee that one can get from a 7-Eleven in the
early days. However, this has a far more creamier and smooth taste.

For a start, the soft serve is in pale green, which reminds me more of the
lime-green color more than the shades of 'Pandan', though the taste do comes
with the taste of 'Pandan'. Besides for the tube of 'Melaka' syrup that is
sticking out of the soft serve, there's interesting ingredients like 'Crunchy
Puffed Rice', 'Attap Chee Seeds'(Palm Tree Seeds) and 'Coconut Shavings' that
goes around it. As I mixed all the ingredients together, there's a nice mix
of milky and crunchy sensation. On top of that, despite of the amount of
'Melaka' syrup that goes around it, the amount of sweetness that I'm getting
is still pretty acceptable. :P

'Cereal Milk'
The name of this has pretty much given one a rough idea of the ingredients
that might be used in this soft server. And that would be 'Cereal'. Almost
every single bite comes with the nice crunchy bits of cornflakes, which
kinda reminds me of the nice 'Parfait' that I have tasted in Japan. :D

So where can you give these 'Soft Serve' a good try?

The name of this place would be 'Honey Creme'.
They currently have a few outlets in Singapore and this is their first
outlet in Singapore, which is located on level 1 of '313 Somerset'.

Getting a Mexican Fix...

I love 'Tortilla Chips' and I personally find them to be one of the best potato chips options in Singapore. And it has a very insignificant link to my post today.

'Tortilla Chips'
This is crunchy and frankly speaking, I'm not putting the dips into good use. Though
I have tried a few slices with the 'Salsa Sauce', but I don't find the taste much
better than the original taste of the 'Tortilla Chips'.

'Burritos'
You can customize your own type of 'Burritos' over here. Therefore I here's my unique
creation with the 'Enchilado Style Add On'. When I scoop and dip the chips inside the
interesting sauce and sour cream, there's actually a good mix of sour, fizzy taste
inside my mouth. Too bad there isn't a lot of chips to go around. :|

Here's my own creation and gosh, this is a murderous 'Burritos'. Not only it's
filling but at the same time, there's a good mix of rice, meat and vegetables
ingredients. Being greedy, I have ordered a few additional types of meat to be added
to the 'Burritos'. There's 'Prawns', 'Chicken' and 'Pork'. Though with all the
ingredients mixing together thoroughly, it's pretty difficult to differentiate the
taste of the individual ingredients, but one thing that I had to admit would be the
filling sensation that I'm getting from this. Though this is buffet style but just
a 'Burritos' like this is a bit too filling as a starter...

'Baja Bowl'
After the 'Burritos' that comes with a lot of rice, the next item that I tried was
this. This is pretty much similar to the 'Burritos' that I have eaten earlier, but
the cooked ingredients over here have a slightly different texture. The vegetables
over here are more crunchy and the meat are more chewy as compared to the 'Burritos'.

So where can you give all the 'Mexican' food a good try?
The name of this restaurant would be 'Baja Fresh'.
The above shows the outlet located at 'The Sail'.

Decent and acceptable duck... :)

I love the Hawker Centres in Singapore. That's one of the best places where 1 can find good food at an unreasonably low price. Therefore the journey roaming around the Hawker Centres continues...

'Duck Rice Set Meal'
The set meal comes with additional ingredients like 'Braised Egg' and
'Dried Beancurd'. Rather than digging into the plate of rice, I ended
up giving the bowl of soup a try first. Unexpectedly, the bowl of soup
ended up to be pretty tasty. Not only it has a tasty herbal taste, it's
pretty sweet too, which is a (+). On top of that, the 'Chilli' Paste that
they are offering are pretty solid too. Not too bad for a start. :)

As for the plate of rice, it's kinda disappointing. Not that it's bad,
it just so so happen that the soup is far more interesting as compared
to the plate of rice. For a start, the taste of the 'Braised Duck',
isn't thick enough. I personally think that the taste of the braised
haven't blend into the duck meat completely. Probably it they have spend
a bit more time working on it, it might have turned out to be much more
delicious. :|

So where can you give the plate of 'rice' a try?

Hidden away but affordable....

Some stalls that are hidden away in a hawker centre isn't that bad too. For example, there's mains like these...

'Lor Mee'
This is pretty affordable and though it might look pretty ordinary, but it wasn't
that bad. This comes with a good spread of ingredients like 'Fish Cake', 'Ngoh Hiong',
'braised meat' and 'fried flour bits'. On top of that, the gravy isn't that bad too.
Not only it isn't watery, it has a thick and gluey texture, which comes with a pretty
tasty texture too. Though it also has the option of having 2 different types of chilli
but both of them isn't that spicy, which isn't going to be of much interest to fiery
food lovers.

So where can you give the dish a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Soon Heng Lor Mee'.

Queueing for Michael....

Nope I don't think that I will queue up for the tickets to a concert, but I am willing to spend a bit of time and queue up for food. :D

'Michael Jackson'
This is also known as a 'Michael Jackson', which is a mixture of 'Soya Bean
Drink' and 'Grass Jelly Drink'. As for the drink itself, it isn't too sweet
and there's lots of 'Grass Jelly Strips' inside the cup of 'Michael'. On top
of that, though it comes with a moderate portion of ice, but it tastes pretty
good too. There's a nice mix of both bitter and sweet taste, which is a (+)

So where can you give this drink a good try?
The name of this stall would be
'He Le, Soya Bean Drink Grass Jelly Drink'(和樂豆花水仙草水).

Maximum number of Soups...

When one has the hunger for a bowl of Chinese Soup, where would be the best place to go? Well if you ask a hundred person the same question, you might ended up getting a hundred different answers. However, what I'm introducing today has something to do with a bowl of soup... :D

'Herbal Turtle Soup Meal'
Not sure how the bowl of soup will ended up to be, but usually I will order a bowl of
rice to goes with the bowl of soup. I still miss the good old days of soaking the bowl
of rice in the tasty soup. :D

Hmm... pretty hard to see what's inside. Let me scoop out some of the ingredients...

Just by taking a look at the ingredients that I'm scooping out of the bowl, frankly
speaking, I have difficulty figuring which is which. But one thing that I can easily
identify would be the fact that there's a good mixture of different types of turtle
meat been added into the bowl of soup. There's the gelatinous bits, the meaty stuff
and a bit of boney stuff.

Soup wise, I love the thick herbal taste that comes in every single scoop. Even
though it's a sunny day, but the tasty sensation that just get better and better
as I dig towards the bottom of the bowl. Though it's a bit bitter but there's a
nice sweet taste hidden inside the bowl of soup too. Too bad it wasn't a rainy day,
else I would have...

So where can you give this bowl of soup a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Very Lucky Turtle Soup'(狀幸運山瑞).
It's located inside 'Berseh Food Centre'.

Not really a salad bar...

Here comes a salad bar that doesn't sells salad only. In fact, their specialities over here are...

'Chicken Cutlet Set Meal'

Their specialities are 'Western food'. Even though they are preparing and
selling different kinds of salad too but most of the time, I would go for
the affordable western food that comes with a generous portion. I have
already tried the 'Chicken Cutlet' before. The cutlet is pretty crispy and
not too oily. One of the good pointers about this set meal would be the
number of set dishes that you can choose. Besides for the common stuff
like 'French Fries', 'Baked Beans', 'Coleslaw', they also have unique
offerings like 'hashbrown', 'corns' and 'baby carrots'. Though the taste of
the sides ain't too special but as mentioned earlier, the price that you
are paying here is pretty reasonable and the generous portion is a (+).

'Fish & Chips Set Meal'

Somehow I always turned up at the stall pretty late, since I wanted to
avoid the crowd, I always ended up getting the same few side dishes.
So far, I have tried 2 set meals and I wouldn't say the mains are super
attractive, what keeps me interested would be the generous portion and
the affordable price. :)

So where can you give the 'Western Food' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Salad Bar'.
It's located inside the NUS Frontier Canteen.
