Not sure if this is genuine...

Signboards can be pretty deceiving nowadays. As I roam around the streets, sometimes I'm getting signboards of delicacy from such and such place. And the actual fact was I don't think such a stall do exist along on that same street before. Not to mention that it needs to be famous enough to be remembered by the regulars.

'Satay'
This is pretty easy, I just need to visit the stall once and I could give
everything that was listed on their menu a good try.

I have gone for 3 different types of 'Satay', which is mainly 'Chicken',
'Mutton' and 'Pork'. The portion over here are pretty average, but at least
they have managed to prepare it such that it has a succulent texture,
topped with a nice and good aroma of barbecued meat.

The 'Satay' sauce over here is pretty interesting though. Though it wasn't
a rare sight nowadays, but rather than serving you a normal bowl of 'Satay'
sauce, they have enhanced it even further by adding mashed pineapples into
it. As you dip the 'Satay' sticks or chunks of rice into this sauce,
besides adding a sweet taste to it, it has also add a light zesty taste to
the stick of 'Satay' too. :P

So where can you give the 'Satay' a good try?
The name of this stall would be 'Old Punggol Satay'(舊榜鵝沙爹).
It's located inside 'Alexandra Village Hawker Centre'.

Wings of a Duck

Nope, I haven't reach the state where I have a strong affection for the wings of a duck. But I do know that there are fans of 'Duck Wings' out there..

'Duck Meat Set Meal'
For a start, this stall has thrown in quite a bit of effort preparing
the plate of 'Duck Meat' nicely. All the different parts were organised
nicely. Though by creating an appealing look for the dish can gain the
attention of the customers, but at the end of the day, it's the taste
that really matters.

Over here, the taste of the sweet braised sauce has blended into every
single slice of 'Duck Meat'. On top of that, though it ended up to be
slightly a bit dry, but the chewy sensation of the duck meat still
exist in the plate of 'Duck Meat' over here. Too bad, they didn't provide
'Yam Rice' or the nice 'Sambal Chilli' over here, else the overall taste
of this meal will be much more better.

'Duck Wings'
As compared to the 'Duck Meat', it seems that the 'Duck Wings' come with
a far more thicker and stronger taste of the braised sauce. Though this
might look pretty messy, but nice taste of the braised sauce is a
guaranteed. :P Initially, I was thinking of keeping some for dinner, but
as I poke one into your mouth, I just couldn't stop myself from moving on
to the next one, and the next one and eventually the last one... :P

So where can you give the 'Duck Meat' a good try?
The name of this stall would be
'New Market Teochew Braised Duck Rice'(新吧刹潮州鹵鴨飯).
It's located inside 'Alexandra Village Hawker Centre'.

Notes:
  • Opening Hours:
    Saturdays - Wednesdays: 11:00 - 15:00
    (Closed on Tuesdays and Fridays)
  • Depending on their business, they might wind up the stall pretty early. Hence if you really want to give the stall a try, do turn up early. :)

Noodles early morning...

I was aiming for the porridge or the 'Wanton Noodles' over here a few days ago. However it just seems that luck just isn't on my side. Both stalls are closed for business on that particular day. Therefore...

'Minced Meat Noodles' or in fact it's 'Minced Meat Kway Teow'
Usually, I will go for 'Kway Teow' since it's much more filling. As for the
'Minced Meat Noodles' over here, the stall owner has topped it with ingredients
like 'fish ball', 'minced meat', 'mushrooms', 'fish cake', 'vegetables' and
also sliced 'chilli padi'. As for the soup itself, it seems that they have added
various types of ingredients throughout the process of preparing this soup, which
kinda explains the flowery, brownish looking and meaty soup. Though the taste of
the soup isn't super fantastic and it's still far more better than a bowl of
plain or pepperish soup.

As for the 'Minced Meat Kway Teow' itself, although the ingredients are pretty
fresh and delicious, but at the end of the day, I personally think that they
have added too much sauce into the bowl of 'Kway Teow'. Therefore, it ended
up becoming a bit soggy, which is kinda disappointing. However, I think that if
you are going ahead with the other types of 'Yellow Noodles' like 'Mee Pok', etc
... the Noodles might ended up to be much more better and delicious. XD

So where can you give the 'Minced Meat Noodles' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Lian Kee'(蓮記).
It's located inside 'Alexandra Village Hawker Centre'.

Beyond the neighbourhood drinks stall...

After a heavy meal in a coffee shop located nearby, I was looking for the drinks stall in the same coffee shop. I realised that this was the only drink stall located in this coffee shop, therefore I decided to give it a try.

'Coconut Milk Tea'
I ended up placing an order for this 'Coconut Milk Tea'. The taste and the texture of this
drink is pretty much similar to all the 'Taiwanese Bubble Tea' that you can get in most of
the shopping malls. What I find it fun would be the long Coconut Jelly Cubes that they have
added into the 'Milk Tea'. I personally find it much more chewy than the pearls that was
added into a regular 'Bubble Tea'.

'Menu'
Here's the menu of the drinks stall located inside the coffee shop. Hmmm... they really
have a wide selection of drinks. There's 'Coffee', 'Fruit Juice', 'Milk Tea', 'Smoothie',
'Fruit Tea', 'Yakult Booster(Har??)', etc... Basically, there's a drink for everyone,
regardless of your age and your gender(?). According to their Facebook page, it seems
that over here, you get to choose the type of 'Sugar' that you would like to add into
your 'Coffee' too. There's like 'Crystal Sugar', 'Cube Sugar', 'White Sugar', 'Row Sugar'
and 'Brown Sugar'. (If you ask me... I really don't care... :P)

The name of this stall would be 'Brown Sugar' by ESKIMO.
It's located in one of the coffee shop along 'Bukit Merah Lane'.

A fishy Breakfast...

Since there was a meeting early in the morning and I have managed to wake up early (too early) for it, I decided to try my luck with the breakfast options over here.

'Pork Porridge(猪肉粥) and Raw Fish Slices(生鱼片)'
Since the nice 'Wanton Noodles' isn't open, I decided to give the porridge over
here a try too. For a start, although the texture of the porridge is pretty
acceptable, but the taste of it is pretty normal and a little too plain. However...

The 'Raw Fish Slices' are amazingly good. With a generous portions of raw fish
slices, lettuce, sesame oil, a bit of soy sauce and fried shallots, this is a
refreshing plate of food for breakfast. The taste of each individual slice of
raw fish are pretty fresh and the fragrance of the sesame oil are pretty nice too.
The vegetables that come with the dish are pretty crunchy and refreshing too. In
another words, I think that I have just found a new place for good breakfast. :D

So where can you give the 'Raw Fish Slices' a try?
The name of this stall would be 'Rui Ji'(瑞记).
It's located inside the village of 'A'.

Notes:
  • Opening Hours:
    Tuesdays - Sundays: 07:30 - 11:00
    (Closed on Mondays)
  • One thing that I love about this place would be the freshness of the 'Raw Fish Slices'. I was queueing and observing the helpers of the stall at the same time. One of the helpers has been consistently slicing and preparing plates of 'Raw Fish Slices' non-stop. And looking at the speed that they are selling away the individual plates has pretty much explain why the same guy has to keep on slicing and preparing plates of 'Raw Fish Slices' non-stop. :P

Interlude: Have a break, have a healthier drink

Do you still remember about the existence of the village of 'A'? I was passing by that place a few days ago and I decided to go in and have a mug of 'A' juice.

'Avocado Juice'
Rather than sticking to the same old stall, I decided to have a mug
of 'Avocado' Juice from one of the stalls located near 'Avocado King'.
Pretty much similar from what you are getting from 'Avocado King',
the juice that I'm getting tastes pretty much the same. It also comes
with a smooth, thick and creamy texture and this would be a pretty
good alternative if the queue for 'Avocado King' is too long. :D

Okay, since the village of 'A' is so big and there are a few stalls selling 'Avocado Jucie', so which one am I referring to?

The name of this stall would be 'Mr Avocado: EXOTIC JUICE'.
Though I have mentioned it earlier, but this stall is located
inside the village of 'A'.

When T meets Beancurd...

As I move from a Hawker Centre to another, I always keep a lookout for desserts. And since beancurd seems to be a new trend nowadays, which is pretty much similar to the bubble tea burst in the market back then, it seems that one wouldn't have any difficulty in finding and locating a beancurd stall nearby. Here comes today's special...

'Earl Grey Beancurd'
Back then, we are getting the normal beancurd and we are slowly
progressing towards beancurd with fruit fragrance. Just when we think
that that's the furthest they can go, we are getting beancurd with
natural ingredients like almonds and rose. However, that isn't everything.
Now we are getting 'Earl Grey Beancurd'. It comes with a pretty strong
'Earl Grey' aroma when you put a spoonful of 'beancurd' into your mouth.
Though the texture isn't as good as some of the competitors out there,
but a plus(+) will be given to this stall for the interesting new idea.
(Hmm... I wonder if anyone could come up with '8 Treasure Tea' beancurd...)

So where can you give this 'Earl Grey' beancurd a try?

The name of this stall would be 'Beans Fragrance'(豆香).
It is located in the village of 'A'.

Early prawn...

Woke up slightly earlier than usual but what can you do? The first item that pops out from my mind would be 'food'. I decided to explore the breakfast options in my neighbourhood...

'Prawn Noodles'
Luckily, I managed to climb out of bed pretty early, otherwise I
might have miss the opportunity to try this bowl of 'Prawn Noodles'.
The ingredients that were given were pretty normal. There's prawns,
few slices of fish cake, few slices of pork meat and bean sprouts.
Although, the noodles and the ingredients doesn't taste fantastically
wonderful, but somehow the taste of it is pretty acceptable.
As compared to the noodles, I think the taste of the soup is even
much better. The strong taste of the prawns can be extracted from
this small little bowl of soup easily. Furthermore, the taste of the
soup will only get better and better as time goes by, which makes me
wonder how tasty the soup can be when it reaches late afternoon...

So where to get this simple bowl of 'Prawn Noodles'?

The name of the stall would be 'Wei Zhong Qi Prawn Noodle'(味中奇虾面).
It is located in the village of 'A'.

Wan a Ton of Noodles?

In Singapore, when it comes to breakfast, there's always more than 100 and 1 different possibilities. There's all sort of English Breakfast, all sorts of porridge, there's Dim Sum, vegetarian Bee Hoon, etc... As for myself, been a big fan of Noodles, Noodles has always been my first choice. Therefore...

I happen to pop by this place and it's opened, I decided
to give it a try. (This seems like a pretty infamous stall
it's closed during late lunch hours and dinner... I wonder
what so great about it.)

'Wanton Noodles'
So what's so special about this 'Wanton Noodles'?
Each bowl of 'Wanton Noodles' that you have ordered from
this stall will come with the normal 'Wanton' and fried
'Wanton'. Good and smart move for ambitious foodie like
me that wants to try everything and I can save a bit too.
(Some of the 'Wanton Noodles' stall in Singapore tend to
charge you even much more if you ask for both types of 'Wanton'.)

Taste wise, although the mouth-size 'wanton' were pretty
small, but the fried ones are pretty crunchy. On top of
that, you can taste the meat of the prawns in each and
every piece of 'Wanton'. Besides for the delicious 'Wantons'
that you are getting, the springy Noodles are another
attractive point of this dish too. It is probably one
of the most springy plate of Noodles that I have eaten
for months or years. :P

So where to get this delicious plate of 'Wanton Noodles'?

The name of the stall would be 'Tien Siang Wanton Noodles'.
It is located in the village of 'A'.

The case of the Missing Egg...

I'm not sure is it me or what but how come 'Laksa' nowadays doesn't comes with a boil egg any more? Is it because of the amount of time needed to boil the eggs or the cost of each egg is getting higher and higher, but I want my egg and give me my egg now... In exchange, I don't want the cockles, Thank you.

I had this hunger for Noodles that particular night or in fact I have
a hunger for Noodles every single night. Hence when I saw a stall
selling noodles, without any hesitation I decided to give it a try.
I ended up placing an order for the biggest bowl of 'Laksa' that they
have. And it ended out to be one of the stalls that will use a boiled
egg as one of the main ingredients in a bowl of 'Laksa'. I will never
forget the moment when I saw a boiled egg floating in my 'Laksa'.
I was astonished. Although the taste of the 'Laksa' was pretty normal,
but it sort of reminds me of the good old days where each and every
bowl of 'Laksa' that you can find will comes with a boiled egg, just
like Mee Siam. Soup wise, all the sweet 'Laksa' soup fanatics out
there will definitely love this place. The soup is so sweet that
despite adding all the chilli padi and chilli paste, the soup still
doesn't taste very spicy. (Hmm... I wonder, is it because I'm getting
immune to normal spicy stuff or I really need to start searching for
super extra spicy food.)

So where can you find this stall?

The name of the stall would be 'Hong Seng Minced Meat Noodles'.
It is located in the village of 'A'.
Note:
  • Operating Hours: 8am - 9pm daily
  • Closed on Sundays.

Traditional Chinese Pastry

Speaking of Chinese Pastry, all the sticky rice cakes will come popping out of my mind. Pastry like 'Soon Kueh', 'Ang Ku Kueh', etc... So here comes the main topic of this post.

Here comes...
The above shows 2 different variety of 'Soon Kueh'.
One of them would be the normal 'Soon Kueh' and one of them would
be a 'Soon Kueh' that is using bamboo shoots as the main ingredient.
If I'm not mistaken, they have more than 3 different kinds of
'Soon Kueh'. And on top of that, they also have more than 5 different
kinds of 'Ang Ku Kueh'. Besides for the common ones that's filled with
peanuts and red bean, there's favours like coconut, green tea, durian, etc...
Although the taste are pretty normal but I guess that their selling points
are the interesting traditional Chinese Pastry that they are selling at a
pretty affordable price. :D (I would like to try the 'Green Tea Ang Ku Kueh'...)

I was this poster outside their shop and think this should
give you a better idea of what you can get there. :D

This should give you a better idea of the types of
'Ang Ku Kueh' that they are making and selling.
(Being adventurous, I decided to try the Coconut 'Ang Ku Kueh'
and the Green Tea 'Ang Ku Kueh'. The skin of the 'Ang Ku Kueh'
isn't too sticky which makes it match more easier to chew.
On top of that, the strong fragrance that the ingredients have
simply makes it even more irresistible. Luckily I wasn't that
hungry at that moment, otherwise I might have purchased and eaten
all the different types of 'Ang Ku Kueh' at one go.:P

So where can you get all these Traditional Chinese Pastry?

The name of the stall would be 'Poh Cheu'.
It is located near the village of 'A'. :P

A pot? of thick Laksa

Over the past few years, I have been eating 'Laksa' from a bowl. But if I'm not mistaken, I have a vague memory that I have eaten 'Laksa' have a clay pot before. Hence, the game of Googling begins...

I am correct. There's indeed a stall that prepares clay pot 'Laksa' in
Singapore. Although it's slightly pricier than normal 'Laksa' but...

you are getting many different kinds of ingredients in this clay pot
of 'Laksa'. There's cockles, prawns, bean sprouts, chicken shreds,
fried bean curd, fish cakes, etc... Here comes the best part. Although,
the soup of the 'Laksa' was slightly a bit too dry but the taste of the
soup was pretty thick. In fact this is probably one of the thickest
'Laksa' soup that I have tasted for years. Besides for the great taste,
eating a hot and spicy bowl of 'Laksa' on a Sunny day was pretty
challenging. :D

Maybe this is the secret behind the good pot of 'Laksa'
A was taking a glance at the way they are making each and every
pot of 'Laksa'. First they will add all the main ingredients into
a clay pot and pour an amount of 'Laksa' soup into the clay pot.
Followed with the step of placing the clay pot over a fire and
heat it up. Therefore that's probably the biggest secret behind
each and every pot of hot and spicy pot of 'Laksa'.

So where can you find this stall?

The name of this stall would be 'Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei
Clay Pot Laksa'. This stall is currently located at the
village of 'A'.
Note:
  • Operating Hours: 9am - 5pm daily
  • Closed on Sundays.
  • (Although the operating hours are until 5pm, but I was there more than 4 times and my conclusion would be to get there before 2pm, else nothing will be left.)

Singapore style pickles

Pickles are something that each and every country has. In Japan's Tsukemono, Korea's Kimchi, there's also everyone's favourite like Pickled Cucumber that you can get it all over the globe. As for myself, I think that Pickles to a certain extent are pretty much similar to appetizers. They are around to help you to build your appetite. :D

So as for today....

'Chicken Rice with Acar'
'Acar' would a type of Pickles that can be found in the South
East Asia. It's made up of ingredients like Carrots, Cucumber,
Pineapple, Peanuts, etc... Loved the sweet and sour taste of it.
Especially when there is lots of peanuts all over the 'Acar'. :D

Either ways, as mentioned earlier, Pickles are good appetizers.
And it's not like everywhere you go you can get it. The best
way to get it was probably be Chinese restaurants or probably
places that sells economical rice. After placing a plate of
Chicken Rice here, I was expecting a plate of rice with a few
pieces of cucumber and a few pieces of chicken meat. I was pretty
surprised that they are serving 'Acar' with it. To some extent,
I think that the chicken rice is pretty normal but by adding
'Acar' to it, has definitely push it to a completely different
level. If you are experiencing bad appetite without a good reason
you probably want to pop by the place and give the chicken rice
a good try. :D
(That reminds me I think it has been more than half a year since
I have last tasted 'Acar'. =.="")

So where can you get this delicacy?

The name of the stall would be 'Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice'
(紫金城海南起骨鸡饭). It is located in 'A Village'(Alexandra Village).

BBQ-ing in a village

Here I am again, blogging about my little adventure at 'A' village. I have to admit that this place is located near or too near to my current workplace that I just couldn't resists the temptation... And it just so so happen that I have been popping by this 'village' for the second time this week... =="""

Anyway today's menu.

Sambal Kang Kong (Water Spinach) and BBQ Sambal Stingray.

I love BBQ Sambal food. Especially when you take a bite from a
plate of freshly cooked BBQ seafood with spicy and delicious
sambal chilli spread on top of it, the taste is fantastic.
Especially when the chef have prepared this properly, you would
ended up biting and chewing the bones in a corner asking for
more. (I know I'm doing that... How about you?)

Taste wise, it's pretty much similar to all the other BBQ
stalls out there except for the fact that this place is
located the city area and the portion is pretty generous.
But once you add the chilli that was given on a separate
plate to the Stingray, you will be playing with fire.
And I enjoy playing with such fiery fire, pushing my
tongue to the limits...:D
(By the way the one that I had shown in the above was the
smallest plate of Sambal Stingray that they are offering.
They do offer bigger plates of Sambal Stingray, which is
meant to be shared among a large group of people.)

Usually it's the other way round but this Sambal Kang Kong was
much much more tastier that the Sambal Stingray. I enjoy eating
Sambal Kang Kong that was sir fried with a lot of Sambal Chilli
and it doesn't ended up to be too wet nor too dry. One of the best
part of this dish would be the shoots. Once you put it in your
mouth, you will realised that the shoots still have this crunchy
touch and I love chewing these crunchy shoots. Its nice.:D
I reckon that this stall was serving one of the nicest Sambal
Kang Kong that I had eaten over the past few months and it has
also set the standards of a good plate of Sambal Kang Kong.

As per what I had mentioned earlier, this stall is located in 'A' village and

this is the stall serving all the spicy delicacies that I have shared
here. The name of the stall would be 'Star Yong Kwang BBQ Seafood'.

Notes:
  • The dishes can be very spicy and if you are not a big fan of spicy stuff, better try requesting for lesser Sambal chilli to be added to the dishes.

Pork Rib + Chinese angelica = ?

I love to go around eating and trying all sorts of delicacy. Therefore whenever I'm free during the weekends or after I knock off from work, I tend to keep a lookout for all sorts of delicacies. O.O (Eyes getting big big... :P) So back to my topic today, what do you get when you have a mixture of Pork Rib and the Chinese herb angelica? The answer would be...

'Bak Kut Teh', or more commonly known as Pork Rib Soup or Tea.
What makes this interesting was the fact that the owner was using the
Chinese herb angelica(当帰) as one of the key ingredients in making the
'Bak Kut Teh' soup. If I'm not mistaken I was blogging about the fact
that most of the 'Bak Kut Teh' soup in Singapore are mostly white in
colour, and it's pretty difficult for you to find dark coloured
'Bak Kut Teh' soup nowadays. I should say that I'm pretty fortunate in
finding another stall selling dark coloured 'Bak Kut Teh' soup, which is
the one shown in the photo. So what makes this 'Bak Kut Teh' soup special?
Firstly, the herbal soup really taste of Chinese herbal and it doesn't
comes with a strong pepper taste. Secondly, most Chinese herbs are bitter
but when you mixed it with Pork Ribs, which is sweet, the taste of the
soup will ended up becoming neither too bitter nor too sweet. This is
perfect. :D Last but not least, the amount of 'Pork Rib' that was given
was pretty generous. By looking at the photo, you can easily identify the
amount of meat floating out of that bowl of 'Bak Kut Teh' Soup.

Although, I was alone, that doesn't stop me from giving the sides dishes
a try. Besides for the 'Bak Kut Teh', I have also placed an order for the
'You Tiao', or fried crullers, preserved vegetables, braised peanuts and
on top of all the items listed in the above, a plate of braised ingredients.
The extra plate of braised ingredients were pretty normal. The fresh 'You Tiao'
are pretty good and not too soft. The preserved vegetables and braised
peanuts are not 'over-cook'. 'Over-cook' here means that the owners doesn't
prepare a very big pot of ingredients everyday, probably they only prepare
an amount of ingredients that will only be sufficient for the day. So that,
we the consumers will only be getting fresh ingredients everyday.

The above shows a photo of my dinner that particular day. :D
(Dreaming of the exact moment of eating the 'Bak Kut Teh' again...)

But wait, before I started dreaming, when can you get the above delicacy?

The name of the stall would be 'Leon Kee Claypot Pork Rib Soup'.
It is located in 'A' village or 'Alexandra Village hawker centre'.

The village of 'A'

Please do not mistaken this as a post for some sports products. It is just a coincidence that the name of this village starts with a 'A' and one of the most delicious bite here also happen to start with the letter 'A' too. And by giving it a name of 'A' village makes it easier for me to remember too.

So what is the delicacy that starts with a 'A'?

Answer: Avocado Juice
When I was walking through the stalls of this village, it seems that there
are more than 4 different stalls trying to promote flesh Avocado Juice.

So what's so great about Avocado?
According to an article on CNN health, Avocado are rich in monounsaturated fat,
which is the heart-healthy kind of fats. On top of the point in the above,
studies have also shown that Avocado can reduce the blood cholesterol levels,
which is good. Therefore, one should really consider adding Avocado into your
daily diet.

Okay back to the drink. This is one of the most concentrated Avocado juice
that I have come across with. It has this smooth, thick and creamy texture
that to some extent I was wondering am I drinking milk. Although this is
not a sweet fruit juice, but it's definitely something worth trying and
getting yourself addicted.

So where is 'A' Village.

'A' village is basically 'Alexandra village hawker centre' and the name of the
stall selling the Avocado Juice shown in this post would be 'King Avocado'.
